yup, Gary...it's a halo. It's moisture or minute dust particles in earths' atmosphere that create that. you should see it through a telescope...it has opal qualities.
Kat is completely correct but what is surprising most of us is the size of the halo. Usually it is closer to the moon but tonight it is almost covering half of the sky!
