The Moorish Idol Thread

Isn't English the language in Ireland?

And gaeilge :) it is the national language of ireland and the reason why it almost became extinct is because the English invaded ireland and all Catholics and Gaeilge speakers would be killed. The reason why millions died and emigrated in ireland in the 1800's was because the English forced us to give up ALL our good supply, and they ruled us until the 1900's.We then got our independence. That is the reason 98 percent of irish people can speak English as well.

Point being... this thread is a wealth of knowledge. Take the time, which you clearly have, to read it.

+1

The night before I took home my moorish idol, I spent the entire night at work reading this thread and various other links off the internet. I never read up on a fish as much as I did with this one.

Well unfortunately, mine died couple of weeks ago in the QT. He was doing well and just out of the blue within 24hrs he stopped eating and died the next day.

I have asked my question on keeping them in pairs and have gotten an answer.I don't have the Time to read over it,it takes me longer to read then most people.

I wouldn't say they are a "pair" but I have two Moorish Idols in my tank. The younger, I bought from LA about two years ago. The "old" guy, I bought from a fellow reefer that had him for over five years. He has been with my original MI for about six months. I have never seen any aggression between them and they are usually swimming with or near each other. My tank is 600 gallons with about 50 fish. Mostly tangs and angels. I feed heavy, seven times per day of 3mm NLS pellets and six times per day of 1mm NLS pellets. I also feed 2-4 sheets of nori 3-4 days per week. Frozen maybe 1-2 times per week. I absolutely love these fish. They are stunning, great personality as far as coming up to where I'm standing and checking me out.(I'm sure they just see me as the food guy) About 3 weeks ago I noticed the spine on the old guy and stepped up the feeding etc He is not as aggressive with food as the younger MI, which eats everything. I have noticed things to improve with the weight and food interest so I hope things continue in this direction. I would like to add more fish but I'm afraid of messing up the balance and I don't won't to add any more food competition for the older MI.

I have a couple of questions for you Moorish Idol experts! What are the most successful foods that you feed your MI's, what size tanks, and what are the chances of successfully getting one to thrive in your tank. I would love to get one, but in the past I heard that they are super hard to take care of, but earlier I was told that they are starting to get easier to take care of in the home aquarium. Thanks in advance!!!

I would read this thread. I believe we have covered the food issue, many times. As for tank size, my 5 1/2 year old Idol is in a 240. I think having a larger tank is helpful in keeping these.

+1 to what Pinnatus said.

Mine is 2 months old and nowhere near established. However just Google "moorish idol" and you'll pull up a plethora of information. This thread is all that info + idol keepers' experience collected into one link. It was and still is my reference as I'm on my first moorish idol attempt.

One thing I read that caught my eye is that apparently if a moorish idol is being chased, it'll swim in a loop and end up behind the harasser (think of a fighter pilot).....imagine how much room that would require and you can imagine how much room the fish needs

Once established, it will nip other new comers if the tank isn't big enough. It does run in loops when chased and it's certainly entertaining to see how it maneuvers to gain advantage.

Alright, the biggest tank that I'd be able to get is a 180, which will *hopefully* be an upgrade from my 90 that I have now. Thank you guys, and I'll start reading the thread when I have a chance!

Well, got my new moorish idol from liveaquaria today. Seems nice and fat. Was the first fish to try food in quarantine. Already eating NLS thera+a pellets, Rod's food, P.E. Mysis, nori, and clam on the half shell. What a piggie. He's in quarantine in a 125 gallon with a flame angel, a copperband butterfly, a cleaner wrasse, a male lyretail anthias, a sunset butterfly, and a powder blue tang. He and the powder blue seem to really like swimming against the big powerhead I have going in there. No signs of any disease so far (I know it's only the first day) but I did a freshwater dip and a prazi dip all the fish, and I start low dose cupramine tomorrow.

This is my Moorish Idol's pajamas. He changes colors quite a bit at night.

Normal colors:

Notice the completly different location of some of the stripes, particularly the white stripes.
