The Moorish Idol Thread

I'd put the tangs in the sump for a few days and let the Idol have the main tank. Idols are relatively defenseless and tangs are very mean and aggressive to newcomers. Plus, they are all of similar size and while idols are not tangs, they are more closely related to tangs than they are to any other fish.

That seems like it is a good idea. The tangs are pretty tame and might be caught pretty easily. Do you guys recommend ordering a med or lrg size idol? The wholesale buy got put back a few weeks so I have some time to get ready for the new arrival.
thanks

One of our very experienced club member recommended the smaller one thinking it would adapt to tank life better.

I read earlier in the posts about using new life pellets. Just wondering which ones your guys are using. Getting ready to place an order and would like to pick some up.

I got my idol this past thursday. It is in very good shape. I added it to my tank along with a powder brown tang and I think it was helpful adding 2 fish at once since the existing fish didnt harass them too much. My other tangs are really not picking on either fish bad at all. The idol hasnt really started eating very good yet. Has been picking at my rock work some and a few bits of foods that are on the floor of the tank but not much at all on the food that is floating around. Nibbled on clams on the half shell but not really ate them. Thinking of trying some live brine. I might be worrying a bit about him not eating yet. Any suggestions?
thanks

My Idol took a few days before he started eating like a little pig. He started with frozen brine and Mysis shrimp, I also sprinkled garlic powder on it and he loves garlic. I mix the garlic and a little Mysis into everything now and he eats it all. Took him longer than expected to eat Nori. He seems to like the purple the best.

Still not eating what I am feeding yet. It is a mixture of brine mysis, krill, forumla 1 and 2 and a few others. Picking at the rocks alot and seems to have taken a liking to my micromussa colony. I have watched it pick at them quite a bit and they stay retracted most of the time now. I like the fish alot more then the colony so no biggie. I cant believe how fast this fish's streamer grows. It has grown real close to 2 inches in just one week. So far it is a really cool fish but I am concerned about it not eating good yet. I guess time will tell.

Have you tried Rod's? Also might want to try live blackworms.

I havent tried rods. I dont think our local store sells it. I tried some live brine but hey just got lost with the other foods I was feeding at the time and couldnt tell they were even there. I will look at the store for the blackworms. My food mix does have bloodworms in it.
tks

Hey guys.I don't frequent this site too much, but I guess I should. My system is a 250 with the sump. 72"x28x22". I have two Moorish Idols currently. One of them is small, maybe 3". Her colors seem really flush all the time. The black thats normally underneath the snout is silverish in color. It sometimes gets darker but it's usually silver. I can't get a good pic but I was wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this before?

So I read about 30 pages of this thread to try and find info on having multiple mi in a tank. Didnt get passed threads from back in 2005. Figured I'd just ask. Tank is 225 gallon 72x30x24. I would like to keep multiple idols. My concern is being so small I can't tell males apart from females. I would hate to only get 2 it turns out they are both male or female then all they do is fight. I don't want to get 3 and have two males one female and the two males fight or vise verse. If I want to try more than one tiny idol in my tank what's the way to do it? 2 3 4...?
