The Moorish Idol Thread

Just took this 2 minute video a few minutes ago. My Moorish Idol eating live clams. He loves it, as do my other fish.

Evil freaking tangs, poor little trigger trying to catch a bite getting chased off. Gorgeous idol though[emoji106]

The only experience I have had was when I ordered mine, I ordered 3. My tank was not yet ready when they arrived, so my friend kept them for me in his sump. By the time my tank was ready, they killed each other off until just one remained, which is the one I have now.

My original 3:

I don't know if they killed each other because they were in a tight space, or whether they would have done so anyway.

Geez so sorry to hear, I'm sorry. Reason I ask is because I currently have 5 juvis in my 80 gallon qt. There all about the same size more or less about 1.5 2". They separate then they regroup. One of them seems to be the alpha as occasionally he will chase the others. I'm actually contemplating getting 1 more or maybe 3 more so that the existing idols don't beat up the new guy and I have an even number. The plan after qt is to put them all in my 225 gallon display and observe carefully. When the time comes I notice two pair up keep those and pull out the rest. My concern though is exactly what happened to your 3, or like how @snorvich mentions about fire gobies that after about 6 months you'll be left with only 1 or a pair if lucky, or how chromis eventually you'll always be left with just the one.

Well, I am sad that I didn't keep 3, but ecstatic that the one I do have is now 6 1/2 years old. good luck with yours and let us know how they do.

does any of your MI pass on smaller food and only eat large chunks?

I guess I grinded my market frozen food too much.. once it's fully thawed out in the tank, the MI wouldn't eat them. But he will eat large chunks of the frozen food or whole mysis.

Supposed to be an Idol coming up on LA Diver's Den tonight at 6. Would have to jump on it immediately in order to get it though.

Wow congrats on the 6+ years that's awesome. Definitely will post an update on mine in due time, let's see what happens.

Hey monkie I'm mmarro99 from scr[emoji16]. They do tend to like the bigger chunks. What I do with mine in qt is when the food completely thaws I scoop out and dump small amounts with my finger and they'll go nuts over them. After they are done with the big chunks they'll go after the smaller stuff but not as aggressively. In my display tank I tend to dissolve the pieces more simply because the anthias cleaner wrasse and gobies go crazy over the tiny stuff.

thanks Manny! next batch I'll make some bigger chunks just for the MI.

your frozen food are completely gone. I have a tank of pigs lol

Omg lol[emoji50] . That was a lotttt. Next batch throw in mussel. I plan on adding mussel, smelt, and possibly cuttlefish. You could always just get some gobies or anthias, they'll go nuts for the tiny bits.

So anyone with experience in keeping multiple idols in a tank?

I have 2 in a 180 for about 6 months now. At night they swim next to each other but when light are on one will stay only on half the tank and the other will swim the whole tank and sometimes chase the other idol.

Dang, well that kind of sucks. Thank you for sharing. I just added egg crate and am going to start separating. Noticed there is a little ***** in the group that from time to time will chase and try to bite others[emoji19]

I ordered 2 and added both to the tank (~115g) and both are doing fine. Friends, even :) Of course they eat all my SPS, but as a pair, they get along well.
How long did you have them together? I thought they only went after zoas and polyps[emoji50]
had 2 and removed them after they began destroying my coral...

I guess 6 months now. They do not go after my euphylia or clams. Everything else is on the menu. Zoas are gone, some SPS stripped to bare skeleton. Even bases of colonies are hit. But cool fish, so I tolerate the "nipping" :)
