The Moorish Idol Thread

You're fortunate that you could intervene without any collateral damage.I had to remove a Tomato clownfish from my display tank and that took hours. My MI stopped eating 24 hours after that disruption. It's been fine since. It still seems to be benefitting from the interactions
of my two yellow tangs that have been in constant company. All are about 5 inches.Seems to keep them all very active.

I'm lucky. I have a friend that can catch fish with his hand, took about 4 minutes. It's amazing to watch. 120g SPS tank, he just herds them around and grabs them :)

Im having a typical problem ( I guess) with my bigger guy. I feed 2-3 times a day, usually food I have sen him eat..mysis soaked in garlic and ROE. I also have to nori feeding stations on each side of the tank. I fill that with red nori (all my fish that eat it, seem to really love that over green) every day. Both of mu idols, yellow scopas tang, cleaner wrasse and golden pygmy angel eat it all each day. My issue is the bigger guy doesn't seem to put on weight. I know this seems to be an issue with these guys. I guess my question is, if he is eating, what else can I do to fatten him up?

I find that fish with flukes will not gain weight.

I feed my tank 2 times a day now, mostly NLS pellets. My Idol stays fat. When it was young though, it needed frequent feedings. Plus I feed a lot (quantity) so that the pellets stay around on the bottom so the Idol can eat all the time.

Hmm, Maybe I should try again. The smaller one will eat anything, I QT them together. I tried pellets then, but they didn't touch it.

Mine seems to grow 1/2 inch a day. It is pretty amazing how fast it will grow. does anyone know the actual purpose of the streamer in the wild?
Jeff
I've read that it makes the fish appear larger to predators. It certainly helps with braking when they stiffen it.

Do you think I should soak the nori is a little prazi?

I have two moorish idols I've been keeping for several months. They are eating well and no loss of weight but I notice that recently they've been breathing very very fast. None of my other fish including many tangs breathe as fast as they do. I'm not sure what is wrong. It's an SPS reef tank with good parameters. So I'm concerning about possible infections or parasites in their gills causing such issue.

Any thoughts are welcomed!
Thanks!

these fish need high oxygen levels to survive. if these fish are together you better split them up soon. at some point the bigger one will turn on the smaller one. unless you know these are a bonded pair it will not work .
