The most fish possible.

I was wondering what sort of stocking list you guys would suggest for a 300 gallon tank. The tank would be 62x36x31. I would like it to have as many fish as possible. I would prefer to not keep any large fish. I am looking to create a visual effect of a huge swarm of fish. I imagine that a number of different schools would be my best bet. What fish can I choose that would all get along and be reef safe?

Just curious,
Brad

Anthias would be nice. I'd go with schools of Bimaculatus, Squamipinnis (collected from the Maldives), Bartletts, Bicolors and Caraberri. I have all these and they school nicely, are out in the open and add alot of color. Add some chromis (greens and some blue reef) and I think you would be happy with the variety of color and mov't. Just add them slowly and remember to feed anthias numerous times a day with a variety of meaty foods that are smaller. Adequate filtration is a must to keep water quality high for some of the anthias species.

If you want the effect of a mass of fish I would say get some anthias and chromis. These 2 species are unique among saltwater fish in that they are pretty much always swimming in open water, almost never hiding among the rocks. Hope that helps.

Hey Julio...I thought you might agree with my anthias statement!!

Hey Tom,
i do agree with it, but i woudl not recomend the Bimacs for firt time anthia keepers since they do require a little more attention and higher quality water.
Your tank however sounds great with all those in there Post a pic so we can see.

So a school or 2 of anthias, a mixture of chromis, and some cardinals. I am not familiar with "blue eyed cardinals" Does anyone have a link?

What about different wrasses? Are there any that would get along well with the fish listed above? I once added 6 Cirrhilabrus solorensis to my current tank but they all died except one. Are there better choices for a group of wrasses? Would I have better luck with a single group of wrasses or with lots of different wrasses?

Would a group of Chalk Bass work well? How many could I get away with in a 300?

wow! Nice. .

If it were my 300 I'd do something like this. . . .

7 bartletts anthias
7 of some other king of hardy anthias
12 Green Chromis

And mix in a couple open water fairy wrasse. Maybe 1 or 2, and maybe just one larger tang (this will cause the small fish to school more with a big fish or 2 in there)

Heres a sample of what I have:

-3 purple tangs
-2 yellow tang
-1 sailfin tang
-1 kole tang
-1 tomini/bristletooth tang
-1 swallow tail angel
-2 true percs
-2 "nemo"
-2 skunks
-2 Red Sea Regal
-1 Juv emperor
-1 Blue Eye Anthias
-1 Sleeper Head Goby
-1-2 Cleaner Wrasse
