The Nano Reefs DIY thread...

Any DIY waterproof LED's for INSIDE a refugium chamber for a biocube? I'd rather not have to take the knife to the back of my biocube if I don't have to!

anyone tried making a diy vent skimmer that fits into the back of one of these nanos?

I'm thinking of trying to build a using one of the pumps in my JBJ28 as a skimmer pump and build a skimmer enclosure over it.

I. Think its a waste of time to make one for a nano tank, especial nanocube. I would recomend doing water change in your tank weekly.

Artsy cube , DIY, with the higher back sump, hiding powerheads on wavemaker and Tunze nano skimmer. Glass (or plastic?) piece in the center, to which the sps frags are glued sideways. Quite original approach, I was impressed.

Agu posted somewhere at forum DIY bottle skimmer, air driven.
From not DIY, ready made: I used Rio nano skimmer ($30) on my 6g Nano-cube, needs only a little cut off of the plastic rim, to accommodate the intake tube. This skimmer is a little louder, than I would like it to be, but works well.

Some waterproof LEDS here Autoillumination

I've used the three LED dome lights as night lights just above the water and salt creep hasn't affected them. Not sure if they're submersible though.

I did pretty much the same thing nano cube boy did to create a refugium in a nano cube.
first, i cut off the vinyl off the back of the second chamber

then, I installed a light

the light is a little big but it still works

lots of room for my chaeto to grow

top of chamber with just the LR pieces, since then I have added a clump of chaeto

When you cut the vinyl out from the center section, do you glue/silicon glass or acrylic in its place or what?

When you remove the vinyl it's a sticker, not like a piece of plastic or glass. All you need to do is to remove that and that's it. You don't need glue or anything.

awesome, cant waite to try this on a freinds nanocube. thanks for the idea. did you just cut the vinyl with a razor blade and peel it off?

i cut out the vinyl, worked well. thanks for the idea. also, has anyone ever heard of using a 23w cfl bulb ballast for a replacement ballast for a nanocube?

I know its 1 whole watt less, but lets face it, 24w of pc light isnt a lot to begin with so 1 less watt wont make a difference. Its a cheap easy fix, thats runs a lot cooler than the original ballast and should last just as long.

Would you guys know if a bulb burns out, will the ballast still be able to function or would you need a new working bulb?

If the bulb burns out and wont work in another hood, you need a new bulb. If the bulb cuts off but works in a different hood, then you need a new ballast.
