So i got some pictures of it cycling with rock and sand, Im proabaly gonna add some more rock... and Get a small power head for circulation,What do you guys recommened for a tank this size?

Im wanting it to be mainly a coral tank, with maybe a clown and a yellow watchman... I was thinking of a seahorse only with the coral....Ill post more when I start doing more stuff.

Add a background, remove the coral skeleton, and you'll be good to go. Everything else sounds good.

What NOOO I like that peice...Yeah Im gonna get a backround for it, But its just cycling It sits there with the lights off all day. Im hoping that I will get alot of coraline. I will probably leave it for like 2 months, maybe more.

Im gonna get more rock....

I cycle my tanks with the lights on a normal schedual as if it had stuff in it..

Looking good so far..
:)

cycle? what's that? ;)

honestly, though-- i've been running nothing but nanos since i started in the hobby (i'm a college kid and i move once a year or so). for EVERY nano i've ever set up i've always used established live rock and water from an established tank. by using just those things i've never had a cycle last for more than a few days, at most. the point of having a nano tank is to have a tank that is moveable and easily established. :)

also, is that an eclipse12? if so, great tank-- it's what i started with and still have running (after three years!). :) there are a few things you should do to make it more acceptable as a reef tank, though.

first, take out the stock lighting and upgrade it (a 96w powerquad or 2x32w pc). keep in mind that with a lighting upgrade that you will have to add a few small computer fans for evaporative cooling, though (water temps reached 95+ when i first upgraded to the 96w and cooked all my livestock). second, take out the stock filtration unit since it will block off light to the back portion of the tank fairly well. you can easily cut into the back of the hood and add an aquaclear filter/DIY refugium. finally, we get to the flow question. personally, i like a lot of flow in my tanks-- in my 26g i've got a tunze 6100 and a seio 1100 running (mostly sps-- a few lps on the bottom). in my eclipse i had something like four rio 600 powerheads along with the flow from the bakpak skimmer and the aquaclear filter/fuge. i did, however, keep only hard-to-come-by zoanthids and sps in that tank (i also added a 70w hqi metal halide along with the 96w powerquad).

anyway, there are plenty of things that you can do with the eclipse12-- just use a dremel and think things through before you go all out. :)

here are a few pics of corals i've kept in the eclipse (with the 70w mh and the powerquad)-- with decent light and flow (and good reefing ability, anything can be done).

this is the filter/DIY fuge-- i kept a lot of new coral/coral that i ran out of room for in the main tank in the fuge. :D

i've kept just about everything (coral-wise) in my 12g-- acros, montis, acans, zoas, other lps and sps. just pay attention to the tank more than you would a larger tank (things get out of whack VERY quickly in nanos).

Those are awesome pics. You're calling me out here yosh... :D

Here are pics of my old 6 gallon Eclipse. Like yoshiod said, ANYTHING is possible. You just have to mod the heck out of your tank to get there. ;)

Be sure to really took into Seahorses if you are serious about having one. They are very sensitive to coral stings.

Add a background,

Jordan I am starting to think you get commision on selling backgrounds.....you seem to be suggesting them lately. j/k:dance:

I think we these it should be a bunch of small rock stacked, but not much so you can add a bunch of stuff, or one larger for the same purpose.

yEah I am gonna get some small rocks and add them in, I think Im going to be heading to johns tonight...

Yoshi you answered one of my questions, what kind of protien skimmer would work on it. I totaly wanna upgrade the lights. Thats why Im gonna wait a few months. Overtime at the job should be starting pretty soon. I saw a coralife 125 MH clip lamp. Do you think that would be enough for a 12 gallon for SPS since its such a small tank.

Well atleast I know who to ask qeustions too about DIy and mod for it.....:-)

Ya its an eclipse 12.... I like the tank how its rounded, it look real nice.

Sacdots, actually no. The reason I reccomend them so often is because there's nothing uglier to me than when a tank has no background and you can see all the cords hanging down behind it and the salt creep building up. I've seen beautiful reefs that don't have a background and it's sad to see that people overlook such a simple think because it really makes a huge difference. JMO

Edwin,
The nano remora just came out and would be a good option or if you don't mind an internal skimmer then the fission nano skimmer would be a good option. Although most nano-reefers don't use a skimmer at all.

yeah I know alot of them dont, Weekly water changes and such. Wasnt sure... But this I know Im doing

Taking the stock filter and hood out and replacing with either a MH 150 14k clipon from coralife or some 65w pc's

More Rock to build the back up

A little more sand

Im either going to do a Hang filter as a refugium or incorporate something into the closed loop idea....lmk

And a Backround :-)

Now Im wondering, Could I Drill holes on the bottom corner and top to make it like a closed loop on the nano, Build an overflow in a corner with teeth, I could keep the heater in and then on the upper right hand corner the return from a powerhead pump?

What could I do for the top so if I do put a fish in it, It dont jump out and to help with less evaporation?

A closed loop is a fantastic idea. It will save space inside the tank. The more HOB and outside the tank pumps and heaters you can do, the better IMO. FWIW, Maxijets will work on a closed loop. Seal the intake and return portion of the pump by wrapping it with lots of teflon tape and it will mate with vinyl tuning.

To cover the top, you can use window screening or eggcrate light diffuser. Or build an enclosed hood.

FWIW...
If you do remove the stock hood, it is absolutely necessary to leave on the brace that the hood sits on. Otherwise the tank will bow like crazy.

great thank you matt....you think the maxi 600 would be or too little. Considering its only 12 gallons

What types of corals are you planning? An MJ 600 is what, like 160 gph? I'd consider that adequate for a softie tank. For stonies or SPS I'd kick it up with way more flow.

well if I can get enough light for SPS I would Like to go SPS.

Could I use PC's with this tank since its so small or would one 150 14k MH be enough.

What about External pump wise, What could I use for that If I make it a closed loop?
