This reminds me of the Crichton book 'State of Fear' - a great read on this topic

you are correct, it is a very entertaining piece of fiction.

Thank God for Global Warming. It could be worse, like Global Cooling again. Burrr. If the PH has gone up .1 over the course of 200 years....don't you think corals would adapt? If it goes up another point don't you think they would adapt again? OR do we know longer believe in Evolution?

Let's not forget that the reason that we have so much diversification among species is because of the Rapid environmental changes that have occured over time.....which makes me think that this "could" be natural. We haven't been around long enough to know what IS natural and what we have effected in our short amount of time.

Global warming is a crock of crap..... Its made up to make people like you guys all scared that the world is going to end... The planet has been here way before us and will be here long after we are here. The planet goes thru cycles and us humans with our superiority complex, think we have to control everything.

Live your life, enjoy it while you are alive . Enjoy it to the fullest and stop worrying about all the crap that is going on. If you do, you will just die a horrible death.

I believe in Evolution, but, how do you adapt when making your own body relies on your ability to precipitate calcium out of solution?

By your definition of evolution don't you think the dinosaurs would have adapted if they could?

Wow, you convinced me. I can now see the error of my ways with your eloquent argument and irrefutable evidence.

Isn't that what evolution's all about? Maybe corals of the future won't use calcium to build their body structure. ADAPTATION!

Ya, and if we were around back then, Al Gore would be blaming us for the extinction of dinosaurs. What's your point?

So extending your argument, if we were to take a cat and put it in a hot oven, it is the cat's fault if it dies because it would have failed to adapt quickly enough to the heat.

That example may be a touch extreme, but it follows on from what you have suggested. Your use of the ideas of evolution and adaptation is twisted - it is a mechanism to help animals survive in the wild, not an excuse for us to kill them.

I agree with you, and it sums up the attitude many people have about our relationship with Earth. The attitude is "we're going to do what we want, and if a species can't adapt fast enough, too bad". The species that is going to have to adapt is us, and it flies in the face of people who don't want to change their lifestyle even a little in order to stave off what is happening.

Yes, but your example goes back to believing we're causing this. Again, human superiority complex. Beyond that, there have been major climate changes in the past. Some animals go extinct, some animals thrive. The other problem with your argument, we're in the same oven that cat's in.

Not true. That is not my attitude and that is not how I view our relationship to the Earth. I fall somewhere between. I do as much as I can to help the environment but at the same time, I don't jump on the doomsday bandwagon. My point was, if you're going to believe in evolution (which I don't) you must believe all of it. If man came from apes, something will come from man. If corals came from a worm in the ocean, something will come from corals. And these new species will be able to adapt to the new climates on Earth. After all, according to evolution, it's been going on for millions of years.

You're right, we are in the same oven. You would think that that would give us some empathy towards the cat, wouldn't you? And like I've said to other people, you're evidence is overwhelmingly lacking.

What's your point? That you have a penchant for disregarding science?

It troubles me that you are a microbiologist.
Your characterization of the theory of evolution is quite poor. (particularly of coral evolution which is reticulate in nature)

He's not a microbiologist. No microbiologist would say "if man came from apes," since even a grade-schooler in the Deep South knows that's not what evolution posits.

Boy, it's warm in here. Must be a natural cycle of the Earth.

No holly rollers please.... If man came from ape , then they evolved from one thing into another.... that is EVOLUTION...

wow, i can't believe that someone with the occupation listed as microbiologist could be so short sighted. If your going to try and discredit an established theory, at least get it right. Natural selection is a well documented, discussed, and accepted theory.

lets not have this fiery thread take the dreaded religious turn. RC after all is a place for reef/scientific discussion, not religious rhetoric.

That would be greatly appreciated....

So, eckrynock, your solution to human induced global warming (something you don't believe in) is for everything to evolve (something you don't believe in)?

Would people stop using words like "doomsday bandwagon", "the sky is falling" and the like. I don't think anyone is predicting a "doomsday" cenario happeing (at least in our lifetime). It sound's like every liberal with a thought of global warming is running around like a chicken this it's head cut off in panic.

Global warming probalby won't affect us as much as our children.
