The Official Tessalata Eel Thread

Hi everyone!

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread just for Tessalata Eel (Gymnothorax favagineus) owners for information and photo sharing.

If you have any info or photos of yours please post and share. I would like to keep this specific to only Tessalatas if at all possible.

Here are some photos of mine that I just got. He is about 23" and I have him in a 30g breeder until I move in March when I will be setting him up in a larger tank just for him.

When he first went into my tank.

He loves his PVC pipe.

Here he is eating his first time for me.
teel7.jpg

I fed him fresh tilapia.

He ate about 3 bites of it then I stopped.

His home for now until I can upgrade his tank.

Hope you're prepared for the size that eel will get!
At a shop I worked at in Florida we had one in a 2000 gallon tank and damn he was big!!!

Yea =) A LFS where I go has had about a six foot one that I've seen for the last six or seven years. I've wanted one since I first saw it.. but did not have the means to do so until recently.

I like the big eels =)

sweet!!!! i have been looking into getting one to possibly add to a tank with a bamboo shark any idea of wether thats possible or not? hes really gorgeous!!! as is his owner lol

I hope you realize how big and aggressive these eels get. Doing maitence inside the tank can become virtually imposible as the eel matures. I've seen one knock off a cover that had a cinder block on top of it. If you get bit the bite will usually get infected and become very painful. You are dealing with a serious animal. Good luck and watch those fingers.

lol thanks :P

I do not know if they could live with a shark or not... I would think with a large enough tank it would work out okay... but that's what I was hoping this thread would be used for. Ideas and other owners sharing their experiences.

Anyone who owns one have a thought?

I do not think a tessy and a bamboo shark are going to be compatable at all . Simply put the shark is no where near as aggresive as the tessy is . Tessys are real only going to be ok in a species only tank.
