For me this is C!

I found this photo today (while digging for something else) and it made me remember why I keep holding onto this horrific ugly acropora that's in my tank.

For some reason I an completely unable to get it to reproduce the colour that it had when I originally purchased it (and I know that's not always possible).. but I did get close once.. now it's off in La La Land.. Who else has one of those that you just aren't ready to give up on yet! ..

Here it is shortly after I picked it up. Not the frag in the foreground, but the amazing yellow tinted, purple tipped, silver polyp piece in the background (not the best pics..but you should get the idea) It's sort of "tort like" but, I never spent the time to id it..

These photos were taken shortly after getting the piece in nov '10

Since then I tried cutting the coral up into 3 frags placed in 3 different "zones"

This is the closest I've been able to get it to return to it's original colour.. In march '11
(my parameters from that week )

Salinty 1.026
Calcium 400
Alk 8.5 (note test done with elos kit which means I was proboly at about 10.5 w/a hanna meter/or salifert kit)
Mag 1500
Ph 8.09
Phophastes 0.02
Nitrate 2.5-1

Frag A High light, medium flow

Frab B Low light, medium flow.

(no photo of frag C) at this time

Shortly after this I found AEFW, and my tank went into a chain of issues before I got things really moving again in the right direction over the past couple months. The piece now looks like this. it's recovering, but not showing any signs of it's original colour.

These photos were all taken within the past couple weeks. With parameters being approx

Salinity 1.026
Caclium 400
Alk 9.072 (tested with hanna)
Mag 1420
Ph 8.23
Photosphate 0.07 (was a blip for that week, week prior and afterwords tested @ .02)
Nitrate 1-.5

Frag A - High Light Medium Flow

Frag B - Was medium light medium flow, but is now High Light Medium flow (due to change in lighting)

Frag C (which was in High Light/High flow) but I've recently moved it to Lower Light, lower flow as I noticed the shaded areas appeared to be growing better then the non-shaded

So I guess I have 2 questions..

1) Who else keeps that one ugly as sin coral around hoping it will turn back into the gem it once was.. (and lets see them!!!)

2) Anybody have a similar coral to this, and what are you experiences with it. I'm noticing more and more that it seems to do better in the shaded areas so it's not a "high light" coral.. what else?

I'm nowhere near an expert (this is my first time trying to help with SPS IDs). In your first pic, it looks to me like it could be A. Rosaria. LA sells them in the mariculture section and they look pretty similar to your first pic. Purple with a bit of green tint, and silver / white polyps. The growth pattern appears similar to my eye. I have one in my tank that is coloring back up. 1 on frag rack and 1 lower in tank ... the lower one is darker but they are both just starting to get colors that look interesting.
