The Sting of an RBTA?

Got a nice RBTA yesterday from a local reefer's RBTA split. Here are the obligatory pics from right after he was put in the tank..

What I found interesting was as I was moving him from his acclimation bucket to the tank he grabbed my hand and I thought I could almost feel what I can best describe as heat through my nitrile gloves on top of my index finger. There was no reaction and the heat went away as he let go of my hand.

Is it possible to feel the sting through a glove?

that was no sting.

he was performing the vulcan mind meld.
If your bta approves of your synaptic activity he will attempt another and control you in a vain attempt to rule the world.

if he does not approve you will die in your sleep this evening a most agonizing death as his toxins permeate your tissues and organs.

uhh I hope you make it ?

BTAs are usually considered to have a weak sting. Unless a fish is very small or very weak, BTAs pose no risk. Likewise, in terms of humans, their sting seems very weak compared to magnificas, haddonies (from what I've heard) and gigantea. It seems possible that some people may be sensitive to the sting, but I've never heard of it. That said, BTAs can definitely irritate other anemones and corals.

What ^ he ^ said.

I've been stung a couple of times. While it's happening, it feels kind of prickly. Later, it feels like a mild sunburn. If you're allergic to bee stings you might want to be careful, but it's not really that big a deal otherwise.

I understood BTA's stings to not be very bad. I was just curious what exactly I felt while he was grabbing my hand. Must have just been been the friction.

Also, I made it through the night so I guess he approved of me...

The tiny "spears" they fire may possibly be able to penetrate your glove causing slight irritation that may have felt like heat.

Haddoni's definately pack a potent sting, and while I have very tough skin, I have pulled many "spears" (nematocysts) out of my hands from the little jerk nem.

My magnificas are very "sticky" as well and have also caused me to pull out some "spears" from my hands.

BTA's have only occasionally stung my hand and when they do the sting is rarely noticeable. I move all my anemone without gloves, at least for now until I develop some sort of allergy to their sting.

with a lot of contact to sensitive areas (like the inside of my elbo), my rbtas turn my skin a little red and might sting a little, but it isnt anything serious at all

rbta sting

rbta sting

my rbta is about dinnerplate sized.. i accidentally brushed my hand against it while moving a piece of live rock and the sting I received was equivalent to a jellyfish sting.. I had red stripes on my arm where the tentacles touched it and I had a very bad "burning" sensation for about 30 mins. I think some peeps are more susceptible to the sting than others :-(
