The T5 Q&a Thread - split

I have a 6 bulb fixture I just ordered lights and want to make sure it will be fine for a LPS dominate tank. I ordered 4 ATI Blue +, 1 ATI Purple +, and 1 GE 6500K. What kinda look will this give the tank as well?

14Kish look. Even a crappy fixture should have plenty of light for LPS. If you have Acans they will probably be happier with less light anyway so that could be good.

here are my par #'s, would have liked to see higher up top for sps. but the numbers do hold well through the water cloumn.
Is this all this fixture will push out?
Any input appreciated.

please excuse the pic, it's old, just used it to lay the numbers on. currently looks much better.

where would the ATI Coral Plus fit in to the scheme of thing?

If the tank looks to bright for you the Coral Plus in place of the GE 6,500K will dim it down. It the tank looks too blue replacing a Blue Plus with the Coral Light will brighten it slightly. It will beacily give you some flexability to allow you to tune it to your personal color taste.

Right now I'm running a Radium 400w bulb high enough over my 150g cube to cover the entire tank. On my Hamilton HQI ballast the bulb burns with lots of PAR at a nice crisp white with just of hint of blue. To bring out a little more pop and fluorescence I am also running a 36in WavePoint with all WavePoint bulbs (their blue, their actinic x 2, and their pink).

Well it's time for a bulb refresh and I'm thinking of going with some ATI bulbs this time around. Here is what I have in mind with the goal being coral fluorescence (have lots of neon green LPS corals, orange Rics, and purple clams) and pop from red shrooms and colorful fish.

Purple +

What do you think my brothers and sisters? Could I do better?

Since you already have the Radium it is giving you more than enough Reds and some UV light as well. I would go with all ATI Blue Plus Bulbs for the T-5's.

I here this is the place to go for T5 configs! I have an 8 bulb Outer Orbit unit - will be buying all new bulbs this week.... Whats the best/balanced config for growth/look...

If you read through this thread you will find that it is very debatable. This is what I'm running and Love the results in both growth and color.

Front
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus note 1
ATI Blue Plus
GE 6.500K note 2
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Purple Plus

Rear

Note 1 some people like a little reder look and will put a Purple Plus in this slot instead of the Blue Plus. Others like a little brighter but reder look and will use Fuji Red here.

Note 2 This bulb works good with a lot of blue bulbs but some others prefer the KZ New Generation. If you realy want a brighter less blue look replace the bulb noted in note 1 and the GE with KZ New Generation bulbs.

So no 10k bulb?

So no 10k bulb?

The 10,000K bulbs were great to balance against the old fashion pure 420 nm atinic bulbs. But with the newer 454 to 460 nm Blue bulbs with a few of them in your lighting scheme you do not need the blue that the 10,000K's produced and the 6,500K with more of the warm light works better.

I hated the 6,500K untill I started to run it with more than 4 Blue Plus bulbs and think it now realy balances out the spectrum and still gives a great overall PAR in the frequencies you realy need it.

I believe in giving options though to people as some like a very blue tank, while others prefer a more pure whhite tank. If you go with 2 of the 6,500K even with 6 other Blue Plus bulbs the predominat yellow of the 6,500K will prevail. But with one of these and a purple plus with the 6 Blue Plus bulbs things will remain in balance yet you will get a deep oceal blue tint.

Some people prefer an even deeper blue tank which is why I then open up the option of somethng like the Gew Generation that has both Blue in it as well as the full spectrum. Others prefer more of a blue purple look so there also the pption of ysing either two purple plus bulbs instead of one or using one or two of the Fuji Reds to realy kick the spectrum to the purple end.

The deep blue light in the 440 nm to 480 nm range is used by almost all corals. Red light is very debatable as some corals do use it however some corals were found to bleach out with an excess of red light. The non florescent pigments however do look better with some red light on them as well. That is why I recommend one purple plus bulb that primarly produces blue and red light to give the purple effect.

Just wondering what people think of this setup for an ATI 8x39 setup...
Bulbs form fornt to back.
1- ATI Blue+
2- KZ Fiji Purple
3- ATI Blue+
4- ATI Blue+
5- ATI Aquablue Special
6- ATI Blue+
7- ATI Aquablue Special
8- ATI Blue+

Would anyone change any of the bulbs and why? Thanks

Switch the KZ Fiji Purple for an ATI Purple Plus because the ATI is cheaper and they are practically the same bulb.

Switch your back Aquablue to another Purple Plus because it will help bring out more color.

Switch the first Aquablue out to a GE6500k or ATI Coral Plus. Why? Aquablue bulbs suck. They are white and wash out your colors. The GE is an ivory color bulb that will accent some colors that an Aquablue misses. The Coral Plus is more blue than an ATI Aquablue but also has a small amount of red in it as well. I've been told it has the same effect as a KZ New Generation.

Currently running----------------Replaced With

KZ- coral light super blue--------ATI- Blue Plus
KZ - New Generation------------??????
KZ- coral light super blue--------ATI- Blue Plus
Aqua-science special------------??????
KZ - Figi Purple------------------ATI Figi Purple

ATI Coral Plus in the 2nd slot and an ATI Aquablue in the 4th slot. However, I would move the Purple Plus up to the 2nd or 3rd slot.

Like this:

Blue Plus

Blue Plus
Coral Plus
Aquablue (although I would use another Blue Plus here)
