You could mount the shield a couple inches below the lamps. It looks like you have some wood strips on the sides, you could mount more strips right below those to create a groove the shield would slide into and do the same thing at the center rear (an L bracket the shield would rest on would even work) but I am still not sure it will stay in place with nothing holding it in the front.

Grim -

Finally picked up my tank - dimensions in signature. Canopy 12" tall - planning 2x250w Radiums (HQI Mag ballast) w/ Lumen Bright Mini Wide reflectors. Brainstorming with 2x36" Ice Cap retro fits (ATI Blue +) overdriven to 60w for supplemental lighting. Also, thought about 2 x 36" Ice Cap Blue LED T5 strips for moonlight/supplemental lighting. That will just about max out the canopy space.

What do you think? Should I do something different to bring out green, pink, red, purples or will this rough draft of lighting work well for colors? Obviously, I'm looking to achieve nice flourescents.

Dont use the Ice Cap ballasts, no need to overdrive the lamps.

If you run a Blue Plus in front with a Fiji Purple behind the halides with 2 blue LED strips I think it will be disco. The fiji should pop the reds without making dusk/dawn look funky.

You can probably use 48" T5's if you want, they are just under 48" with the endcaps installed.

Measurements say my canopy is 47" (maybe 46.9") long... meaning I wasn't sure the 48" T5 retro fits would work or not? I figured 36" T5 & LED would be fine - leaving only 6" on each end which I think would be unnoticeable. However, I'll double check my measurements prior to finalizing plans.

I thought you might suggest a Fiji Purple in the back. I'll try it & probably order an extra Blue + for experimenting.

Also, I plan to put each Ice Cap LED on each side of the MH, too.

Last thing, I was surprised that the ReefGeek Ice Cap HO retro fits don't come with an Ice Cap 430 ballast. Instead it states - AccuStart Triad ballast??? Are these quality ballasts?

Yep, the Ice Cap VHO retros have the Ice Cap ballasts. They are great but on a tank 20" tall, and especially when you are only looking for supplemental lighting no need to overdrive.

Grim,

With my new setup would replacing the Aquablue with a UVl Super Actinic really hurt me? I will have plent yof PAR from the Fiji and 2 Blue Pluses and the 2 LED spotlights.

I am trying to replicate my Phoenix 14k that is on my nano. It looks more purple blue to me then white blue.

You will lose a lot of PAR, if you think it looks too purple adding another Blue Plus would probably take away the purple look better, the actinic is going to be violet which will probably make the purple effect look more pronounced.

Hey Grim...

Hey Grim...

I'm going to be ordering my constellation for my 75 gallon tank on Monday...what bulb combination would you suggest. My tank is primarily sps.

Thanks.

I was Browsing through this thread and trying to find if you already recommended a light combo for a frag tank and didn't find anything definitive. Basically i have a 20l that i was thinking of putting 3-4 24" bulbs over the corals will only be 6" from the surface. I am looking for bulbs that will give good growth and color. Thanks for any info

Could use a suggestion for my SPS tank.

Tank is 48"L x 18" W x 12" H

All SPS.

I have a Hamilton Fiji Sun 6 Bulb Fixture. Any idea if it would be okay to remove the splash shield from the light. Reflector will be around 6-8" from the water surface.

Looking for a mix of color and growth.

ATI Blue +
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue +
UVL Actinic White
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue +

Think this migh work out?

Thanks!

Hey Grim i was reading another article on the procolor and, i always thought the whiter-yellower the tank the more growth- im going to have a kz pink and aqua blue plus for my dusk dawn affect then add a 6500k bulb in the mix what should my other 3 bulbs be? as i said before im not having much growth and a friend of mine with t-5 tank had one in her system and hers grew like crazy.

Let me know if you find a 48" Constellation. They have been out of stock since about Sept '09 and best I can tell, no in stock date in the near term that I can determine anyway.

ATI Blue Plus and GE 6500K Daylight. 2 to 1 Blue Plus for 3 lamps or if you run 4 add a ATI Aquablue

If the fixture uses a fan for cooling I would leave the shield on, everyone I've checked loses output if the shield isn't on it. If there is no fan take the shield off.

Lamp mix should be fine.

ATI Blue Plus. They have more PAR than most of the other lamps you listed. The white = better growth is a halide thing. The blue halide lamps don't have as much PAR as the more white lamps. Not the same with T5 lamps/

Well, I have my 120 gal filled and the 8 bulb TEK light mounted - now for the bulbs.

The last combo I listed you said would be 20K ish. If I wanted something a little less blue, what would this combo look like? I am dropping the Fiji Purple.

4 ATI Blue Plus, 2 ATI AquaBlue Spec, 2 UVL Actinic White
or
5 ATI Blue Plus, 2 ATI AquaBlue Spec, 1 UVL Actinic White
