The T5 Q&a Thread

I'm getting ready to change my bulbs and would like some advice on what to use. I have a Current USA SunDial T5 HO 4-bulb fixture on a 46 bowfront, mixed reef -- softies, LSP and SPS. Right now I just have what the fixture came with -- two Daylight 10K and two Actinic Blue 460nm. I'd like to get the right bulb mixture to maximize coral growth & color and prefer a little more white (brighter) than blue. I have an extra Daylight 10K and a GE 6500K which I can use if either will work in the suggested scheme.

Thanks in advance!

Best thing you could do is to add in the GE and replace bother those blue lamps with the ATI Blue Plus which has a lot more PAR.

hi Grim,
I have a question for you, I'm making a new canopy with the following combination of lamps
2x150wmh in the center and 4x 39w T5
so the config looks like this
front
39w 10000k t5
39w 460nm t5
150w mh + 150wmh
39w 460nm t5
39w 420nm t5

my tank is a 75g tall so the dims are 100cm long x 60cm high x 50cm width
I was wondering if this is enough to keep lps, clams and a few sps
the 39w t5 is from coralvue, and a local lfs ordered them for me.
unforunately the only other decent t5 I get here is from JBL
should I switch to JBL or should I just use these coralvue ones or switch to chinese ones instead?
thanks in advance for your help man

can you also tell me the difference in actnic, blue plus and figi purple?
and which one is 460 and which one is 420?
and lastly you recommend GE 6500k, isn't this the standard household lighting?
and how come you don't recommend the 10000k over the 6500ge?
sorry for so many questions, but what do you think about the coralvue t5s?

Wanted to send a thanks to Grim and everyone here.

I upgraded my FOWLR PC's to soon to be Reef T5's last night. I had 2 bulbs break in shipping but replacements are on their way. Major difference just to look at it in the floor, can't wait to get it lit up.

Thought I'd share pics of my 8' 240g running 16 48" T5's.
Bulbs are:

KZ - Fiji Purple
ATI - Actinic
GE - 6500k

Sorry to ask this again but without the search working it is hard to find an answer.

What is the current bulb mix recommendation for a 48" Constillation on a mixed tank?

Thanks!

Hey grim:

I posted this questions awhile ago on what bulb selection to get for my nova extreme but I cannot look at my past threads due to the search engine is being updated.
It is 39W X 4. This isn't the pro model with the individual reflectors but I am not upgrading my lighting fixture until we move and I get a bigger tank. Thanks for you time, again.

Blue is 460, Actinic is 420

Actinic is Violet low PAR that fluoresces corals. Blue is, well blue and fluoresces corals and has moderate to a whole lot of PAR depending on brand. Fiji purple is Blue and red aka Purple.

I don't generally like using the "10000K" lamps too much because they tend to give a washed out look. The GE 6500K is really close to natural daylight and does a good job at bringing out bright green and yellow colors.

Switch out the Actinic White for another Aquablue or even a GE6500K. You will have too much red with the Fiji and Actinic White.

I would opt for 4 Blue PLus, 1 Fiji, and 1 GE6500K.

Grim....can you answer this for me. rtparty suggested you might have further input. The initial question in on the bottom of page 192 if you want what he suggested.

I downsized my tank from a 90 gallon to a 75 but upgraded my light to a Solar Flare.
I did the usual Blue plus, Aquablue special and Fiji purple on the 90 and again on this fixture. I read (somewhere??) that the Solar Flare might be a bit too intense for the softies on the 75. I do have it mounted on the brackets but that only raises it 2 inches.

I bought the fixture used so I'm ready to buy new bulbs. Do you agree with the intensity part? And if so should I buy a bulb that is going to give me less PAR? I have nothing in the tank yet as far as livestock. Only CUC. Right now its:
Front
Blue plus
Aquablue special
Fiji purple
Aquablue special
Blue plus
Blue plus

I have to put the Blue plus together because of the dusk/dawn spacing. This is a pretty good color combo too.
What does anyone think?

Edit: to add...there are no corals in the tank yet. Getting my first fish next week. I was also wondering if I should get a light tree and hang it ($$$)

Hi The Grimreefer :) ,
Do you have PAR reading of most commonly used T5`s here ( ati bleu plus , ati blue spezial , KZ fiji puple ,....) ?
Would be an great addition to the super thread you `ve already created .

greetingzz tntneon :)

is this enough lighting to support a bulb tip anemone? The reason that I am asking is that I do not recall you recommending a fiji purple in the mix...thanks

Fiji is there because it will get you more usable light than a Actinic White. As long as the nem can get to the top of the rocks without laying waste to your tank you should be fine.

Grim:

I have the TX-5 on a 90 gallon mixed tank. I have a lot of sps at the top of the rocks. Do you recommend a different bulb choice. I wouldn't mind a slightly bluer look. I currently run the following.

front
blue plus
super actinic
aquasun
blue plus
aquablue special

Thank you for your help.

You can tweak the color a little by throwing the Aquablue in the rear.

I have a 10 bulb 48" fixture I got a recomendation 6 months ago, but I am just purchasing bulbs and wanted to know if anything changed? I noticed a Actinic white bulb you recomend that was not around then. I have a 4 bulb setup on my current tank that is Blue +, Figi Purple, AquaBlue Special, Blue+ and I am happy with the color.

Also My tank will be a SPS dominated mixed reef with a water level of 19" and 2" of sand. I am trying to figure the best height over the water for the light fixture? A minimum and maximum recomendation would be great as I would like a little space between the top of the Rimless tank and the fixture. My tank is 32" wide if that matters?

Thank you for your time and effort!
