Hey grim, Im currently using a aquaticnics solar flare 6 bulb fixture, that I moved from my 90 gallon to my current 180 gallon 4' by 3' by 2'. I dont feel like the width of the light as well as the output is enough anymore. Im planning on getting the ATI powermodule 48'' 10 bulb. Is that a better choice or should I stick with the solar flare. If it is a better choice, what bulb combo would you go with for 10 bulbs. ( I dont know what bulbs are on what switch). Ill have to look into that. Thanks again.

More lamps would be a happy thing.

I would do 6 ATI Blue Plus, 2 UVL Actinic White and 2 GE 6500K Daylights with a spare Aquablue or two to use to experiment with.

Grim,

I have a 6 bulb Tek that I'm currently using on my 20" deep 72 gal bowfront. It sits right on top of the 7" tall canopy and fits perfectly. I like a whiter look than most, so I use (3) ATI Aquablue, (2) ATI Blue+, and (1) KZ Fiji Purple. I'm looking to upgrade to a brighter fixture and then use the Tek on my frag tank. I don't want to mess with retro kits, so I'm looking for a good fixture. My main consideration is the size of the new fixture since it will sit on top of the canopy (it must be at least 47" long to sit there). My first choice is the Powermodule, but it looks to be only 46.3" long, so my canopy won't support it (I can't hang it from the ceiling). My second choices are the (6) bulb Sunpower and the (7) bulb Constellation. The dimensions for these fixtures appear to be the right size for sitting on the canopy. I also looked at the 6 bulb Solar Flare, but at 15" wide, it would be a tad too wide for the canopy (plus overdriving the bulbs on a 20" deep tank might be overkill). I keep Acro's in the top half of the tank and monti's and LPS on the bottom half. Which direction should I go?

hey grim,

just wondering but why do you usually advise to put the ATI aquablue towards the back?

You don't really want a daylight type lamp with yellow (GE) or red (UVL) tint in it as your first or last lamp because it tends to color the glass and other items there. The Aquablue doesn't do that.

Not sure you could fit the constellation in there either but if it would fit do that. Sunpower would be fine too.

it colors the glass? you mean colors the glass instead of the corals and livestock right?

but with you usually recommend it for the last bulb in a 4 bulb fixture and usually 6 and 8 bulb fixtures too..does its make a difference in a 4 bulb fixture if you switch the ATI blue plus and aquablue so that the aquablue is 3rd from the back and the blue plus is the last one?

just wondering because i noticed that the aquablue is usually last and found that interesting

Blue or Aquablue is fine because almost all aquarium lighting is desired to be blue to some extent. What happens with a non blue lamp at the rear is the light will color anything on the back glass as well as the rock and critters because there is no blue light reaching it. Only that of the last lamp.

just some feedback for grim >>>

Your recommendation for my Constellation >>>
5 Blue+, Actinic White, 6500

Was EXACTLY the looks I wanted. Thanks, I love it!

Stumped on an ATI

Stumped on an ATI

Hey grim, I was looking into getting a ATI PM fixture for my upcoming SPS reef. Tank is (29,52 x 22,44 x 19,7 h inch.)(55 gallon Elos). Now i'm confused on which to go with I was hoping to go with the 24" fixture with 8x24W bulbs but it said in the description that its good for a dominated SPS reef up to 50 gallons, and I hear that the 10x24w is overkill for my system and creates alot of spillage of light.....im stumped and really want to give T5's a shot, been hearing and seeing alot of success with them. Anyway I was hoping you could give me some advise. Hope to hear from you. Thanks!
~Mike
PS heres a link to the fixture if it helps http://www.reefgeek.com/lighting/T5...module_T5_High-Output_Fixture_w!_Bulbs_by_ATI

8 would be fine. 6 would even work if you aren't going to have clams or other light hungry critters out front on the sand.

hey guys/grim,

i have a 33 long (4ftx1ftx1ft) softy tank, with a few acans, im looking for growth and a bit more blue. i have an AquaticLife 4ft 4x54w fixture, standard 10ks and 420/460actinic.

my tank is a peninsula style... i'm wondering what bulbs you suggest and what order, with both front and back panels of the tank being viewing sides.

ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Aquablue
AYI Blue Plus

Should be a bit more blue and pretty much an even look from either side.

Hey Grim, I swung by the LFS the other day to get the UVL bulbs you had recommended to me previously ... however they only had the internal reflector versions in stock. After some prodding they said if I really wanted the "standard" bulbs they could order them for me.

I have the Nova Extreme Pro 48" fixture on the main display and the Nova Extreme SLR fixtures on my frag tank -- Was wondering if I should stick with the "normal" bulbs or get the new "180* internal reflector" versions.
