The T5 Q&a Thread

switching to T5s for my mixed reef tank, got 2 X 250w Phoenix HQIs on an e-ballast. I want the corals to pop but I don't like the 20k look of a radium. The T5s will be used for sun up and sun down also so I dont want the tank to look overly purple or blue at that time. I was going to put one reflector behind my halides and 3 in front. Was thinking

1 T5 - ATI Blue +
HALIDE
2 T5 - GE 6500? fiji purple?
3 T5 - A good actinic ?
4 T5 - ATI Blue +

Need help on bulb selection for 2 and 3. Thanks

Use a UVL Actinic White in #2 The UVL Super Actinic is nice. If you reallly want to brighten things up I wouldn't do an actinic and use a Aquablue instead.

any one know where to get one of these. its the end cap out of the coralife 48in fixture i can't find it anywhere all i can find is the stand alone endcaps for the DIY fixture

I had some and threw them away. I have no idea what they were made for but they came from TAAM so ViaAqua or Rio are their brands. They make stuff for other companies so there is no telling where one might pop up.

Get a better fixture :lol2:

With only 2 lamps softies are about all you can keep. Do a couple of ATI Aquablues.

lol i meant it will be 4 bulbs not just 2

Still go easy on SPS and such, The good reflectors make a huge difference so the Coralife will be OK but isn't in the same class as the "good stuff"

ATI Blue Plus
KZ Fiji Purple
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus

Just make sure any high light critters are up on the rock

Hey Grim my ati sunpower is on the way to replace my nova pro on my 90 gallon reef. I will be using bulb combo you recommended.
ABS
BP
Actinic white
BP
BP
ABS

With the Nova I was running 2 BP, 2 ABS, 1 Figi and 1 Actinic. Dusk to Dawn was on for 9 hours and other bulbs for 8 and fixture was sitting on legs about 4 inches above water. To aclimate corals to much brighter light what height should I start the fixture at and what time schedule to prevent bleaching? Also how ofton should I raise time and lower fixture to get to about the same height.

Hi Grim. For your considerations, what the best combination of T5 bulb is, in order to keep the best coloration on my SPS coral, if you will run with 2 MH 400W Reeflux 12000K. Tks

Using the old lamps would help. Go with a 10 to 12 hour dusk/dawn and start with the other 6 lamp on a 4 hour cycle. I would increase the time an hour a week until you get to 6 hours then start replacing one lamp every few days. After you have all the new lamps in just watch how your critters do and you can increase the 6 midday lamps time as you want.

Ok awesome. Another question to add. I dont think I will be hanging the fixture as soon as I get it and I am thinking of just putting it on 4 2x4's on each end until I get the hanging figured out. That will be 8 inches + ~3 inches above the water line.. What number of 2x4's do you think I should do, I can also decrease a 2x4 each week also. I have most of my SPS middle in the tank and they havent had strong light ever. Thanks G.

Ok, I'm just going to recap Grim. Got a 90 gallon mixed reef so the tank is 48"X18"X27". I'm upgrading the lighting to 2 X 250w HQIs in the lumenmax 3 reflectors which are 11"X"11" so I have 8 inches of room for supplemental lighting. The lighting will be used for sun up/sun down and to make things pop more with the 14k phoenix bulbs.

I was thinking about putting in 4 X 2" T5 reflectors and using T5s. I'm so lost about what bulbs to use or if T5s would be best.

Was gonna run from back:

T5 - ATI Blue +
Metal Halide
Metal Halide
Metal Halide
T5 - fiji purple
T5 - UVL Super actinic
T5 - ATI blue +

Would this look good? I really don't need extra PAR, so this is just to help with the halides color. Since the halides are already blue do I need the blue +? would I be better going with a procolor or something? Also, should I set it up like this with one T5 in the back and 3 up front? I was going to put an angle on the ones up front to direct them back a little bit

Go like 12 inches high and keep your same times. Lower the fixture a few inches each week.
