The T5 Q&a Thread

OK looking for a quick answer without much headache. I have the RSM250 and 1 of the 10k bulbs went out. I bought the tank used so I don't even know how long they were in there. Time for replacement, it calls for 6x39w t5's. I just picked up a sps package from aquavista99 and I really want them to shine. I appreciate the help and recommendations.

4X ATI blue plus
1x ATI aquablue special
1x ATI purple plus

i run in my 8bulb powermodule
b+
b+
b+
coral light next gen
ati purple plus

you would think that would look really blue but its not.question would corals benifit with more white tube bulbs.it seams when i run just 3 white bulbs the tank is really bright.tank size is 60x18x19.oh and do the bulbs have different intensity or color when running the fans at different watts i have mine at 7.5v

If you run the fans at 9v you'll get better lamp life. I don't believe you'd see any change in growth changing lamps. You might pick up some colors adding a GE 6500K or some other lamp with some higher green and yellow output.

Looking for some help. I'm throwing around some thoughts on my current lighting as I seem to have two corals that are losing color, primarily reds. I'm currently running a Aquatic Life 72in fixture over a 125 standard 6-foot tank 4x39 watts bulbs, front to back actinic, aquablue special, actinic, aquablue special. I just switched out a aquablue special for a geisemann 6500 to see how things go.

I'm thinking of upgrading to an aquatic life 72in 6 bulb fixture and looking for great coloration and steady growth. Any suggestions would be great for bulb combos, lighting fixtures etc. I primarily have lps corals, a few zoa's, no sps but would like to in the future.

4 Rows of Blue Plus, 1 of Purple Plus and one of either Aquablue or GE6500K. What you have now is very low PAR assuming you are running true actinic lamps and not blues.

Normaly I like Pure Atinic in the mix to give the 420nm wave lenght but with two of them in only a 4 bulb fixture does leave a lot space for to the bulbs. My first move in your case would be swaping on Actinic for a purple plus, and one of the two aqua blue special for a blue plus.

The more bulbs the better provided you do not have a space issue. If you swap out the bulbs now you can always use them on your new 6 bulb fixture. In which I'd simply add two more Blue+ bulbs or an atinic and a blue + .

ok so i got my fixture it is a 4 bulb t5 and i think that i have decided on 2 blue plus one purple plus and one kz new gen. from what i have read from front to back they should be:

b+
purple+
new gen
b+

with the blue pluses one one switch and the others on the other however my switch controls position 1&3 and 2&4. with that being said i was thinking from front to back:

blue+
new gen
blue+
purple+
or
blue+
new gen
purple
blue +

i was wondering if i did the second setup that it would matter that during my actinic cycle i would have one blue and one purple.

the only way i can change my switches is to rewire in the light which i would prefer not to do.

thanks for the help

Help me decide for my 120g 48x24x24 tank.

ATI Sunpower 36' 8x39 or 48' 8x54

I would like to keep a gigantea anemone and some SPS. I was wondering if a 36' fixture mounted slightly higher would give me enough PAR or if I would be better off with the 48. Thanks.

Try this with the 2 blue plus as the dusk/dawn
New Gen
Blue Plus
Purple Plus
Blue Plus

Or
Blue Plus
Purple Plus
New Gen
Blue Plus

with the Purple Plus and rear Blue Plus as dusk/dawn

If you have a good reason for wanting the shorter fixture it will work, you don't even have to mount it all that high but you can't put high light items at the ends of the tank.

i am undecided on whether to get the ati sunpower 6 bulb or 8 bulb for my 2ft cube. going to be mixed reef.

thoughts?

Upgrading to a 120g 4x2x2.. Softies, lps and maybe some sps corals.

Purchasing a 8x54 tek fixture. I know its alot of preference but what geisemann bulb setup would give me the best growth and color?

I also plan to purchase a set of r2 moon lights for added shimmer effect.

Well I would say you need to weigh your pocket book against your options. The 8 bulb fixture will cost you more all the way around. But personaly I love the 8 bulb fixture because it gives me loads of options. While most people are not crazey about pure atinics I like using 2 of them on my Dawn to Dusk circuit to create a deeper blue effect in that time period. While in my Midday cycle I start pushing for a brighter tank. The 8 bulbs does give you many more options so you can please your eyes as well as keep the PAR up there.

You are Specific that you want Geisemann Bulbs.

First I would use 3 of the Atinic + on your dawn to dusk circuit along with an the Aqua Pink. (These bulbs spectrum looks the closest to the ATI Blue plus and the ATI Purple.)

On your mid day cycle I would add another Atinic+, as well as another Aqua Pink, along with you chioce of either
2 Aqua Blue Plus bulbs
or for a brighter look 1 Aqua Blue Plus and 1 Mid Day Sun.

Looking at there spectrums most of there bulbs except the Atinic+ show considerable peaks in the yellows and reds. While I think you need some yellow and red it is easy to go overboard where these wave lenghts can become counter productive both visualy as well as for promoting coral growth.

I have a question about T5 lighting. I am a recovering reefer and its been a while since I have replaced the bulbs and am getting the aquarium going again after a massive loss. I have a 75 gallon reef, with custom canopy with 4 t5 powered with Icecap 660 for daytime and 2 regular t12 for dusk dawn, all need replacing. After reading here and getting awesome insights, I ordered 2 ATI blue plus, 1 ATI blue special and 1 ATI Fiji purple. I am trying to figure out what to replace the last two regulars with..... move them to T5 or change to LEDs for dusk dawn?
Placement so far is front to back,
blue special day
blue plus day
fiji purple day
blue plus day
suggestion? dusk/dawn
suggestion? dusk/ dawn

I am open to rearranging the bulbs or whatever but any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Any of the blue LED strips for Dusk/dawn would look cool. Thats what I would do. Aquaticlife and if you can still find them Ice Cap had some nice ones.

Thanks for the super fast reply. If I don't want to spend $160 on the LEDs just yet, any other suggestions? Like get two more T5 holders and use 2 more T5? if so what colors?
Is the configuration ok as well or should I move the dusk dawns from the back to more int he middle?
Thanks a TON...

I like your idea of adding 2 T-5 and using them just for the dawn to dusk effect. Actualy you could ten go to three phases of light for an easier transition.

I'm starting to like the 54W Actinic Plus T5 HO Fluorescent by Giesemann
for a possible dawn to dusk effect that should look good with either a single 54W Blue Plus T5 HO Fluorescent by ATI or their54W True Actinic 03 T5 HO Fluorescent by ATI dependent on how blue you want that dawn to dusk look. The pure Atinic will give you a bluer look that will not be as bright as the Blue Plus.
