The T5 Q&a Thread

I REALLY don't think that's enough light, steal or not. You should have 8 rows of lamps anyway. I'd maybe think about the 7 row (14x36") lamp Constellation fixture or the 8 lamp Sunpower would kick butt (8x80 watts lamps, 60" long) but neither are going to be a steal. MAYBE if you could get 2 of the novas but I still don't know if it is going to do anything but make the corals down lower survive.

Thanks Grim.
That hurt allot! I was hoping To get into T5s with the great price I was getting on the Nova pro hood but I will have to hold out for now. unless I can get a good deal on a 14 bulb or a 8 BULB HOOD.
I did find a 72'' Aquarium Light T5 HO 8X 80 for $770.00 would this work for my setup? They come with 4-10k sunlight bulbs, 4- actinic bulbs, and 8 - 1 watt Blue LED's
Thanks for your help

Try this from reefgeek, it's only 60" long but would work WAY better than the Nova

60" 8x80W Tek Light T5 High-Output Fixture w/ Bulbs (Black)

786.00 out the door AND includes your choice of lamps. The upper corners might be slightly dim compared to the rest and you couldn't place high light critters in the last 6 inches or so of each end of the tank. Add an external fan blowing over the top center of the fixture and I think it would work.

Grim, My tank is only 72" long x 24" depth (sand bed to water line) and 18" wide. So I need your help! I do not want to hang the light I would to place it on top of my tank.

You could make a couple of cross bars to sit on the tank frame for the fixture to rest on.

Grim,

I'm doing a 300g Marineland DD tank upgrade (72"x36"x27") and hoping you could help me with a 9-lamp combo. (I'll be ordering from Reef Geek). Running a retro setup with 60" lamps on three Icecap 660 ballasts.

A few additional questions:

1) I'm considering shielding my lamps/reflectors this time around, because I can't get the salt stains off the reflectors and will probably need to replace them. IIRC, there is about 5-10% PAR loss with a sheet of acrylic and 20-30% PAR loss with glass. Is that correct?

2) I was running Tek2 reflectors (6x60") on my 180g. They are pretty stained after about two years of use. Any idea how much PAR loss these stains usually cause? If the PAR loss is only 5-10%, then I'll consider just running them without acrylic shielding. If more PAR is lost though, then I need to consider replacing the reflectors and using shielding. Thoughts?

3) I'll need to get at least 3 more reflectors minimum (9 if I replace with all new). Are the ReefGeek reflectors still the recommended ones to get? or is it worth considering the Tek2s again?

Thanks,

Alan

Hey Grimm I've got a question. I have a choice between uvl and ati bulbs. Which bulb manufacturer do you think is best and what bulb configuration would you recommend for growth and asthetics in a 4 bulb 48" set-up? I've been to your home page, would you reccomend I stick with that? Thanks for the help.

Greetings from over the pond

I use an ATI Powermodule 8 x 54W on a tank 56"x24"x26" high (water level at 24", about 1" sand bed).

I would like to get max growth out of my corals (SPS from bottom to top and some LPS near the bottom) so just wondering if you think my lamp combo is ok or if you would recommend any changes:

From front to back, all ATI lamps -

Blueplus
Aquablue special
Actinic
Aquablue special
Procolour
Actinic
Aquablue special
Blueplus

I was using 4 aquablue special based on advice from ATI who say that these are the 'main' tubes that will contribute to growth, whereas the others are more 'complementary' for tuning colour rather than growth. I had a slight re-arrange and swapped an AB out for an actinic as it looked too white.

Many Thanks!

I would rather mount the reflectors a little further up, 5 or 6 inches than mess with acrylic but it will work, just make sure you get good airflow through the area the lamps are in.

I know on a older Tek fixture the stains on the reflectors didn't make any difference but I can't say on the retro stuff, different reflectors.

Personally I would use AquaIlluminations reflectors, way better.

For lamps I would do 5 ATI Blue Plus, 2 KZ Fiji Purple, 2 GE 6500K Daylights and 2 ATI Aquablue

I know that's 11 but you'll need to play to see what you like. Wire it up so the ballast control every other lamp as in

ballast 1 lamp 1, 4, 7. Ballast 2: 2, 5, 8 Ballast 3: 3, 6, 9.

That way you can do 3 stage lighting and have it be spread evenly across that tank.

2 ATI Blue Plus, 1 ATI Aquablue and a UVL 75/25 or for a 20K look 3 Blue Plus and a UVL Actinic White.

The Blue Plus will get you as much growth as the Aquablues and a whole lot more than a Actinic. I would change out one or both of the Actinics for Blue Pluses.

Many thanks Grim.

Interesting to read i'll get output from the Blueplus similar due to the aquablue.

I'm due a lamp change out soon, i don't think ATI do the procolour any more but i like the way it really accents anything with red or pink so i'll maybe try a fiji purple.

Hey Grim when you go LED are you going to have a "The LED Q&A Thread" as well? Which model/brand are you leaning towards? Of course you'll need to get a tank first. :)
