Grim,
It's time to replace my t5s in my 72" nova pro. It has 6-10K and 6-460 nm Actinics. I have a 125 mixed reef. What do you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

4 rows ATI Blue Plus, I row UVL Actinic White and on Giesemann Aquablue or ATI if you cant get the Gmann.

hey grim I really need help. So i got my new lights and installed them today. I put

front
blue plus
fiji purple
blue plus
blue plus

and at first everything looked good. well I came back later and some of the corals arent looking that great and part of my favias is dying. also, when the actinics came on it looks really dull like its only showing the fiji purple but those two bulbs are the same as before and before it was really blue. so could you help me with this. I dont know what wrong.

Wait my bad. Before I didnt have a fiji purple. I had a uvl super actinic. Now do I keep all 4 bulbs on my whole lighting schedule?

Anyone else having crazy slow response trying to post?

Anyway back at the ranch, 2 blue plus for dusk/dawn and hit the other two lamps for the mains. I'd run like 10 hours for dusk dawn and 6 for the rest.

I havent had a slow response trying to post.

Ok, so do I have the bulb line up right? Can I just turn on the back 2 blue+ for dusk/dawn and then for the mains turn on the front blue+/fiji purple?

The 3 B+, 2 AB and 1 Fiji is a good combo. I like 4 B+, 1 AB and 1 Fiji more myself but that may be a little blue for you.

I have found when mixing bulbs that a Fiji or Aquablue cancels out a blue plus most of the time.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give the 3/2/1 a try. Yes, I think the 4/1/1 would be too blue for me. I assume the 3/2/1 will be a bit more blue/purple than the 3/3 I run now with more pop?
Hi Ryan. Here is the update. I have the 3/2/1 combo as posted above and really like it. Its not too blue or pink/purple. Its a lot like the 3/3 combo, but with a bit more red/purple. It has more pop. I have some large red monti caps that look nicer and everything looks good in general. Part of it was my bulbs were really getting old and were well overdue for replacement. The reflectors needed a good cleaning as well. The tank is much brighter now. Thanks for the advice.

How old were your lamps? You have an 80 watt system don't you>

Yes, 80W driven by IC660 so ~ 100W. The bulbs were ~ 15 mo old.

I seem to remember seeing your setup with fans blowing on the middle section of the lamps. On the 48 inch lamps that kills the output. Something to think about but in any case 15 months is probably pushing it a bit.

There are 4 fans blowing in from the back. Two of them pretty much line up with the ends, two in the middle. I have vents in the top front lid of the canopy that are just in front of the front most bulb. The airflow is basically in from the back, across the bulbs and out the front top. The fans are pretty low flow, quiet fans. Not a ton of flow, but enough. You are saying just cool the ends? That would be kind of hard to do without having the air from the top down and just hitting the endcap area. I think if I disconnected the 2 middle fans, the air would get pretty dispersed by the time it got to the front bulb.

I dont have a par meter. This is something i would like to test, but dont really have a good way to do so. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help and all the work you put into this subject. Its been a great help for many.

Here is an open canopy pic that shows the setup. The blue plastic isn't there for cooling. It was a quick hack fill in after I lost a couple of fish jumping out the back.

Hello all. I'm in the process of building(setting up) my own reef tank. I already build a 30gal sump the stand & canopy for a 6 month old 75gal that I got for $50...cool. I am now researching the lighting and skimmer. My question is should I buy 2 seperate 24" fixtures or just get the 48"? I am thinking about the brace in the middle of the tank. Also are T5's good lighting or MH. Although MH may not be for me since they cost $$$ specially the bulbs. My plan is to keep mainly softies. I was planning on buying the retro kits and ballast and just hooking it up to the canopy, but after doing the math it would cost me the same if not more than just buying the finished product. Any suggestions?

If you could get a hold of any kind of light meter I would try shutting down or even reversing the two center fans and see what happens.Even on an overdriven system a slight bit of airflow over the middle of the lamps dropped the output. Be really interesting to see what happens on the 80 watt lamps.

If you price out a good retrofit against a good fixture the retro will cost less. Most retros include your choice of good lamps where the fixtures don't. a 6 lamps Aquailluminations retrofit would allow you to keep anything in that tank. If you decide on a fixture go with a 6 lamp Tek light, reefgeek has good prices on both.

You have me curious. I'm going to have to try this. Any idea what I can get for a cheap submersible lux meter?

Hey Grim, I have question for you.
I picked up 40 breeder today and I want to
switch from 250w MH to t5 (I had 46g bow front both 3ft)
I see local guy selling 4x 39w ati powermodule with
2 blue+, aquablue, and fiji purple.
I'm wondering if 4x 39w powermodule is more than enough to cover 18inch width?
I'm planning to go full sps dominated tank.
Thanks
