How about 6 bulb tek vs. 4 bulb icecap?

Sorry about asking so many questions I'm just really indecisive about my lights over a 90g tank...

For a 90 I would get a 6x54 ATI Sunpower and never look back. Great light for that tank. Enough to have stonies but not so overpowering that you can't keep LPS happy too.

Grim...If you look at my join date and posts you can see that I'm a long time lurker and try to manage on my own but your expertise would be great, and I do value your opinion.

I've been out of the game for a few years and have only had a 55g with a PC fixture so things were pretty simple....set up wise that is.

Building a 120g 48x24x24 this time and almost done with the cycle. Sump/fuge, Vertex IN180 and the likes.

Have a low profile canopy so retro's will sit about 4" from the surface. Rock stacked and not on the back wall so I was thinking about going with 6 4x54 T5's. Think that works?

Sure I would like to do as many SPS as possible but realistically I doubt if it will be a dominate SPS habitat to start.

So if you don't mind lets go shopping at Reefgeek!!!! Just pick your favorite set up!!!

LET...SLR...TEK?

Icecap 660 or Triads?

and your favorite bulbs front to back

thanks buddy

Oh trust me I'd love to but I'm on a college budget here. Saving up for one of those would take me 8 months. I'm looking for one used but not having any luck.

If you plan on clams or SPS on the sand you need 8 lamps.

Do the 6 lamp Tek. You can add an external fan blowing over the top of the fixture and get a big jump in PAR. I figure if your a college kid your hanging by your heels from the balcony doing beer bong every night so an external fan is no biggie.

I KILL ME

Just one of the clamp on fans on the rear center of the tank works and isn't that annoying. Just don't direct the air right at the lamps, it's better if it blows against the top so the air flows through and around the fixture.

Hey Grim,

I'm thinking of going with a 24" 4 lamp Aquaticlife T5 for my new system Im setting up. It is going to be a 39g Cadlights (24x20x20). I know that this is not the best fixture for output but I like the way it looks and I love the idea of the built in timer. My question is...based on the deminsions of the tank, do you think I will have any problem keeping SPS corals or clams? I do plan to go with some good bulbs (i.e. ATI or KZ). what do you think?

TIA

6x39 Tek light

Thank you for the quick reply.

Do you think the elite is worth the extra 30 bucks? Also, do you think it is better to get the brackets or the cable kit? Do I need the extra adjustability of the cable? Or will the brackets be good enough for that? Of course the brackets also cost more, but would be easier to position.

What bulbs would you recommend for this? I figure I will keep clams, BTAs, macro algae, plus a few small fish.

Finally, even though I am not planning on SPS, if I ever decided to do so, how deep could I put them with this fixture? And would it be too strong for LPS?

Not unless you are willing to keep the clams up on the rocks. Even then you need 6 lamps.

ATI Purple Plus Available Monday 9-13

ATI Purple Plus Available Monday 9-13

Reef Geek will have the purple plus available 9-13. You will need to call or email to get the bulb on your order.

If you can get one with 6 lamps. You will need to keep clams and SPS below the lamps. With only 4 you only have 10 to 12 inches front to back with full power.

Ok, well most of the 24" fixtures seem to be 4 lamp systems. I will look around. I also need a fixture I can mount with mounting legs. I don't want to hang a fixture from the ceiling. Thanks.

I'm sure this has been discussed in this thread somewhere, but 300 pages! Whew! That's a lot of reading! I'm wondering if anyone has any info on the uvl 454 bulb? Is it similar to the ati blue plus in color? Any par readings?

Similar to all the other blue bulbs. Less PAR than the ATI Blue Plus and I believe it is even less than the Giesemann Actinic Plus.
