The T5 Q&a Thread

This thread should really be a sticky!

I don't need an answer for bulb combos as I have read enough to decide. I do have another question though regarding lights..

I am going to get a 60" 6x80W Tek fixture for my 72" 125g tank. Now I don't want to ceiling hang it as I have really high ceilings but I can't use the tank bracket either. Can I glue something on the tank brackets to help them stand up better? Such as an acrylic sheet or something? lol I do want it to look nice though

Do the 6 lamp Tek. You can add an external fan blowing over the top of the fixture and get a big jump in PAR. I figure if your a college kid your hanging by your heels from the balcony doing beer bong every night so an external fan is no biggie.

I KILL ME

Just one of the clamp on fans on the rear center of the tank works and isn't that annoying. Just don't direct the air right at the lamps, it's better if it blows against the top so the air flows through and around the fixture.

:lolspin: :lolspin: :lolspin:

I'll probably end up with a retro because I have a canopy but this is what I'll do. Thanks Grim!

Hello The Grim Reefer,
I would first of all let me make you my compliments for your website! Exceptional! I will keep him under observation surely!
I really care for your opinion and would like your advice, too short and fast .....
I recently purchased a ceiling of Korallenzucht 6x39 T5, but unfortunately I changed the tank, now I have to set up a tank 100x60x55h (cm) 40x24x22h (inch) I hope I have made a good conversion anyway ..... gross volume is 330 liters (87 gallons )....
I second your opinion with this breed mainly SPS lighting? I intend to use the ZEOvit and have the bare minimum amount of rock by putting all sps along the center of the tank .....
or is it advisable to change the lamp with a 8x39 and since we are making it dimmer?
The LED lighting as you see it? Currently?

Thank you in advance for your time.
Andrea

Hey Grimm, I have to order my setup ASAP today to get it tommorow and having to work today I can't read all the post to find the answer to my question. Is this the same you would suggest for a retro 75g mixed from reefgeek? Thanks

If you plan on clams or SPS on the sand you need 8 lamps.

Looking at my current light configuration, I think I would like to add something to bring out more of the reds & deepen the greens. Overall right now the tank is pretty blue and I wouldn't mind whitening that up a bit either.

Fixture is ATI PM 8x24

Currently running:
B+
B+
Fiji Purple
B+
GE 6500k daylight
12000k Aquablue Sp
12000k Actinic White
B+

I'm considering dropping the Fiji Purple and adding in a few more Aquablue Special lights and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

Thinking:
Aquablue SP
B+
Actinic White 12000k
B+
GE daylight 6500k
Aquablue SP
B+
Aquablue SP

Just wondering if this mix will bring out more red/greens while keeping the blues looking decent and overall a more white appearance.

A Fiji Purple bulb is what will help bring out reds. Aquablue bulbs wash colors out IME.

I would maybe change out one of the Blue Plus for an Aquablue and see what you think.

I would bet you could get more out of your colors with dosing some additives then the lighting. I can't remember exactly what additives did what but I'm pretty sure that potassium helps reds.

Don't see why not. If hanging would be easier you can make hangers that are pipes connected to the rear of the stand or wall and come up over the top of the tank. You either bend the pipe or just use elbows for the bend then hang the fixture from it.

8 lamps would be better. The LED fixtures using 3 watt Cree LED's would work over that tank. Pacific sun has some interesting LED fixtures and of course AquaIlluminations if you can get them.

Grim , i have a 220gal DT 84x24x24 and i just picked up 2 48" 4 bulb ho t5 fixtures they have 2 Daylight 12000K and 2 actinic blue in both fixtures, there will be a small overlap in the middle over the center brace, what type of corals will i be able to put in this tank with theses lights? also would you recommend changing the bulbs to another combo? i am new and nave been reading through the threads , some recommend MH and some T5 what do you think?

I;d use 2 ATI Blue Plus, 1 ATI Aquablue and a KZ Fiji Purple in each fixture. SPS on the top of the rocks under the lamps, LPS below the lamps at any level and softies out front on the sand.
