This is a great thread Grimm.

I am hoping you can tell me the right combo of lighting for color and growth (color is far more important). I'm looking for a crisp white with a hint of blue (not a fan of very blue tanks). I have a 90 gallon tank that is mostly SPS dominant. I have an 48" icecap illuminations light that I will be retooling two overdriven T5s. It will have 2 blue LED strips, 4 T5s and 2 overdriven T5s. The arangement will be.

Grim,

I just started running the Elos PLanet II fixture. It has two 150watt halides with 4 36" T5 slots. The halides produce great shimmer and a lot of good white light. I'd like to make the colors "pop" like it did with my 4xT5 fixture. More specifically, I'd like the reds, purples, yellows, and greens to "pop." What 4 bulbs do recommend?

Thanks

Grim just wanted to see what your thoughts were on using T5 over a 72" tank. I was looking at the aquactinics constellation if not that possibly a ATI 6x 60" fixture. I could look at the 8X ati but still 60"

Thanks

I wouldn't be trying to overdrive lamps in that fixture. Coming up with a cooling system would be a way better use of time and resources.

3 ATI Blue Plus, 1 ATI Aquablue and 2 ATI Purple Plus would probably get you where you want to be looks wise.

Not sure you can even get the Aquactinics anymore. 60 inch ATI would work fine. If the tank is more than 18 inches front to back go for 8 lamps.

Ya, well from some of the sites I found they are still selling them. Ya its 72x24x29.

How much better are the powermodule over the sunpowers?

Good luck finding them. Aquactinics hasn't been building fixtures for over a year now.

I just recently purchased an Aquactinics TX5 used off of here. I had to go directly to Aquactinics to get a hanging kit as NOT one vendor was carrying them.

Some places said they had stock but when I called they didn't. They said they stopped updating Aquactinics stuff because there is no time line for them to return to the Aquarium lighting game.

Go with a 60" ATI over the Aquactinics. The Sunpower and Powermodule are nearly identical performance wise.

will i have better results with the clam(told you later gf, and maybe a few high up sps) with the Current USA SunDial T5 HO w/ Timers & LED
Sundial T5HO or the 48 inch 4x54W Sunlight Supply Tek Light High Output Fluorescent Lighting Fixture

the tek does not have lunar lights, should i try to fit the 6 bulb fixture into my 18 wide bow front. if not answer which i will be happier with the the current usa or the tek!

doma I know the tek is better par than the NEP, also the tek now offers a tek elite for really not much more at all, and has active cooling etc built in, bang for buck its better.

Check out reefgeek.com for the comparison

Grim,

I'll soon need to replace the stock bulbs in my 4x54 Omni fixture. It came with 2-10k's and 2 actinics...bulbs have "Opti" branded on them.
The tank is a 55 with softies, zoos and a BTA, but I'd like to mix it up a bit in the coming year with some LPS, easy SPS and perhaps a clam or two. The fixture is 6" off the water.

Will this fixture get it done, what bulbs do you recommend, and what method should I use to acclimate the tank to new bulbs?

Thanks in advance, and wow...300 plus pages?

-Adam

2 ati Blue Plus 1 ATIAquablue and 1 ati Purple Plus. Don't know about the fixture but if it has good individual reflectors clams should be OK.

Nope, it's got a one piece ind. contoured plastic/mirrored finish reflector. Maybe I could supplement for a clam with a targeted PAR38 LED Spotlight? It's not a dealbreaker if not...I can live without clams/SPS if this fixture isn't sufficient. I have little interest in buying another fixture for this narrow little tank. I'll save that for "Someday" when I do a much larger upgrade tank.

I'm assuming by losing the two actinics, I'll be significantly increasing PAR. Are any of these lighting acclimation methods prefferable over the others?

  • One bulb at a time
  • Raise/Lower fixture
  • Reduce/Increase photo period

The PAR 38 is a good idea. Change a lamp every few days, do an actinic first, then the 2 daylights and the second actinic last so you are spacing out your 2 biggest gains.
