The T5 Q&a Thread

I'm designing a canopy for my 135g. Need to make it as short as possible due to ceiling height and the desire to have the stand as tall as possible for best viewing. How close to the water surface can I safely get. 24" deep tank, no wavemaker, minimal surface agitation, coast2coast overflow.

My tank is a hex that is 165 gal.30 inches deep. It has 8 24inch T12 lights in it with 2 icecap ballast. I am going to change to T5 lights, with the icecap ballasts. I only keep soft corals, and they all look good under the T12s. But I want to change to T5s so they will run cooler. My question is out of these lights http://www.wave-point.com/Lighting_folder/LampSize.html which ones would you use? They will have to be the 21inch ones. What combination would you use? Thank you Bruce.

Grim, I tried both combinations (Blue Plus & Blue Plus vs. Blue Plus + Purple Plus), and I really like the Blue+Purple combination for day/dusk. It gives a really dramatic effect I like (though many might find it too pink, I guess). Thanks for all your help!

How do the aquatic life fixtures stand up to tek fixtures for par? Let's assume they have the same bulbs in them.

Depends on who you ask. LOL

I have only seen numbers once for an AquaticLife fixture and they didn't give much detail. I don't even know what thread it was in anymore either.

I remember seeing that an ATI fixture put out almost double what an AquaticLife did. If that is true, then a Tek beats it out pretty easily.

I personally don't think an AquaticLife is much better than a Current USA fixture. Same ballasts, same suppliers, same crappy bulbs to begin with. AL is a direct break off of Current USA and they just used all the same Chinese manufactures that Current USA always has.

I asked a while back about lighting for a 55 gallon with a GBA and a couple of corals. leather, mushroom and polyps. my issue is when you wrote back you said 4 ATI blue + 2 fiji purple plus and 1 GE 6500K I have a 8 bulb t-5 system what should my last bulb be. also any pictures what this lighting will look like.

How much do you guys that have light meters think the PAR on a 6 bulb 54 watt sunpower changes with the fan speed? I swear I think I can also see a color change in the tank going from 4v to 7.5 --> 9 volts (I guess that 9 v is the recommended speed now??)

Just curious if anyone did PAR measurements on the different fan speeds

Another Blue Plus

I believe you see the lamps loose PAR sooner with the fan run slower rather than an immediate drop in PAR. I saw a slight maybe 10 percent increase going from 4.5 to 7.

Current recommendation for the 6 bulb NEP is as follow?

Blue Plus
Purple Plus
Blue Plus
AquaBlue
Blue Plus
Blue Plus

Or would it be better to swap the #2 and 3 bulbs or perhaps Blue, Blue, Purple, Blue, Blue, AB Special?

Hello..i always used mh lights but im starting over with a small tank and i want to give T5s a shot.

I need to ask you a few questions about it, please let me know your inputs

First what i want to accomplish:
1.Be able to keep mostly if not only SPS corals
2.Avoid heat issues by avoiding mhs

My tank:
40 gal breeder (36x18x16)
20L gal tank as a sump (about 3ft below display)..sometimes sumps help to keep the water in the cooler side
mag 7 as the retun pump (will set up outside the sump

Bought a 36" 6 lamp sun light supply...older model

questions:
1.Will a 6 lamp fixture be enough to keep SPS corals?

2.How much heat they create..i would like to have an all sides covered type of hood...im not into the big bright spot on the back wall look...so...how high from the water should the fixture sit?

3.I would like to re-create the 20k look i like with mh...with so many kinds of t5 bulbs..can you give me the right combination for my set up?

4.Since it is a pre-assemble fixture and it doest come with fans...will leaving an open hood top allowing for the hot air to go out be enough or do you think i will still need to put fans or even a chiller?

I may have more questions after your inputs but for now i will leave it like this.

thank you again guys....

What you have listed is good unless you need to make minor tweaks to get a better dusk/dawn look
