You are going to have a tough time keeping any softies or LPS happy using the IC 660 ballasts. It will be too much light for them especially on a shallower tank.

A clam would do fine with standard ballasts and your other corals will be a lot happier.

ok so any suggestions for another ballast?

Quick question everyone.. Looking at lighting options for a 24x24 cube... Can you recommend a fixture and a bulb combination?? It will be for an LPS and some SPS dominated tank..

Thanks..

Grim, its time for me to replace my bulbs in my 8x54watt tek light...i came to you for my current bulb selection which is:
Front
ATI Blue +
ATI Blue +
UVL 75/25
GE 6500k
ATI Aquablue Special
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue +
ATI Blue +
Back
....i am curious what you think about swappin the 75/25's with KZ Fiji Purples, ive heard good things about them? also im not crazy about running the GE 6500k again, its too white for me so any suggestion there would be helpful too
Thanks, Scott

Bout 4" but that depends on the fixture too,

Hey grim i have a 75 standard tank with a few lps but will be a 95% sps shortly would like to know how many inches from the water should he fixture be in order to have the majority of the tank covered with sps (little nervous about bleeching torches ect)

Its a 6x54watt sunpower ati

The top will be pretty white and colors will suffer a little. The Aquablues are too strong and wash colors out IMO. I don't like running them.

the KZ New Gen is bluer than the Aquablue so you still get some pop out of it. I really like the Purple tubes myself. They bring in some warmth and colors that the blue bulbs miss.

Do you like the purple plus more than the figi purple? I just realized in my current set up my 4 t5s are made up of 2 ATI blue plus, 1 figi purple and 1 ATI aqua blue. I like how it looks so maybe I should try?
4-blue+
2-figi purple
2- kz new generation

Great thread, very informative!!

I am curious if anyone is running only Blue and Purple bulbs. I am considering either:
3x Blue +
2x Purple +

Or even:
4x Blue +
1x Purple +

Thoughts?

Edit: Fixture is a 48" Aquactinics TX5 over a mixed 90g reef.

Shouldn't be an issue

I know of a few local reefers that are running 4 Blue Plus and 2 Purple Plus. All of them have reported better color and that they like the look more.

I would get 4 Blue and 2 Purple. That way you can play with them and see which combo you like more.

I have an oceanic 70 tech tank(anemone tank) with a current nep 6x39. The tank inhabitants are a blue Lta, a rose bta, and several color morphs of green bta's. The fish are a pair of gsm clowns. I will probably add some lps like various euphillia and chalice's. What bulb combo will highlight the different colors of my anemones and clowns? Thanks.

55g 48" dual t5

Thank you all for the great information, what a thread. I am replacing the stock bulbs of my Aquaticlife 2 bulb 48'' t5 HO fixture (1 10k+1 actinic).

Just bought first corals: zoos/torch coral/brains/frogspawn/acanthastrea/caulastrea. 55g Tank, depth is 22inches. Since I only have 2 bulbs I know I am at the low end of workable, but hoping it works with conducive placement.

Dear Grimfather, my request is this:

with only 2 slots to work with, and seeking the highest PAR possible, what do you think of 1 ATI aquablue and 1 ATI blue+ (or KZ superblue if deemed better). Cost i'm willing to absorb for the best result. Thanks again for the helpful advice.

hey grim
i bought a ati sunpower 6x80 watt. 4 blue plus 1 aqua blue and one purple plus. the tank is 72x24x19 . how would i place this blubs know 2&5 slots are sperate. then other 4. i am planning on keeping soft corals like zoas and all all and then some hard once is that enough lighting to keep most corals?

If it were me I would do one of two things:

1) ATI Blue Plus and ATI Purple Plus

2) ATI Blue PLus and KZ New Generation

The first one may not look the greatest but will help bring out the pinks and reds. The second combo will look a little better but will lose some colors.

With only 2 bulbs, you are stuck between a rock and a hard place. See if someone locally has another 2 bulb fixture for sale or even a PC setup to add on to what you have.

You are going to have a tough time keeping anything happy with that little of light though.

That will be plenty of light for whatever you want.

8x24 ATI Sunpower or Powermodule with 5 ATI Blue Plus. 2 Purple Plus and 1 GE 6500K Daylight. Add a second GE lamp in place of a blue plus for a more 14K look.

Fiji Purple or Purple plus for the 75/25 and Aquablue for the GE

Replacement setup

Replacement setup

I didn't see this thread when I registered yesterday, so I will copy it here.
Thanks for any help!
I have a 75g reef (4'Lx20"Wx20"deep), with 2 emperor 400's, have had the tank for about 5 years.
I currently have starburst polyps, bulb anemone, brown toadstool leather mushroom, blue and red mushroom corals.
I also use Instant Ocean salt, but just bought Instant Ocean Reef Crystals.
I would like to add some color and I was thinking about Blue and/or gold/orange Ricordia, yellow colony polyp, yellow tube coral, or maybe a white starburst polyp
Right now I have two blue/green damels, cleaner shrimp, purple firefish, clownfish, six line wrasse, and two anthias (male and female), along with some snails and a small white starfish that has come out of nowhere about two months ago.
It is time to replace the T5's with new ones and I really need some assistance. I have been researching this much more lately, but I could really use some expert assistance.
I have a T5 nova supreme 4 lamp set-up and have only used 2 10000k and 420 actinic lamps. I have had trouble keeping zoa's and some others alive and I believe it is the lamps.
I understand most people use only one daylight lamp and the others are blue or purple. I really would like lamps that make the corals "pop" and also promote growth and healthy corals.
I am now leaning towards 1 KZ fiji purple by Korallen Zucht, 1 GE starcoat 6500K, and 2 ATI blue plus lamps, all are T5 HO. Any thoughts or better recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
I am new to this site and looking for a great deal of information to create a more colorful, healthy, and enjoyable aquarium.
Thanks!
Mike
