Anyone using NOT5s for anything? I was thinking of using one or two to suppliment my HO actinics. What do you all think? If so what kind are good?

I believe the grim reefer used helios brand disposable fixtures. He liked the spectrum of super blues I think but was hoping theyd come out with a real ballast and individual reflector for which at this time they do not?

Squiddy:Wish I knew the answer, but sounds like your gonna find out soon enough ;)

Thanks for the reply , Justin. What do you mean disposable? How long do they last? Can you buy just one?Who sells them?

For sps in a 75 gallon would you use 1 day (ge6500k) or 2 of them in an 8 bulb t5 setup. Jim

Me personally, I like good growth so I will always recomend at least 1 for sps,lps and some softies.Coralmorphins and zooanthids no.

Giz,I cant say, as Ive never used them, some good and bad stories if I recall correctly.

Jimsreef,

I'm experimenting with T5s on an additional 102g tank that I picked up used and plumbed it into my main 120g SPS tank. The 120g uses dual 250w MH and dual 110w VHO actinics and it has given me very satisfing results for the past year or so.

The 36" six bulb Tek T5 will be a good experimental comparison for me since I have placed identical corals into this setup from my 120g. I've also took 4 clams and placed them on the bottom.
Time will tell.

Getting back to what you were asking, the tank addition with the Tek lighting is all SPS and clams with a LPS here and there.
I'm using (or trying) two actinic +, two GE 6500k, one true actinic & one aquablue +.

With this combo, it has given me a satisfactory look with decent intensity.

I think I will buy some extra bulbs so I can mix them arround a little to see what I like and what would be best for growth. Jim

That's exactly what I just did. I figured once I finally got the look I wanted, the extras would be replacements in a year or so. They are not wasted like a MH is if you don't like the color.

I have a solar tube. can i cut it up and use it as a reflector for my T-5s? it looks as shiny as my other reflectors I have bought so far.

You can do anything you want, I wont stop you:D

But seriously though, if you were to mold or fabricate it into a shape that would be parabolic, itd be better than a flat panel reflector.Or if you if your just using it as a flat panel, itd be just as good as any other out there basically.

I would reshape it to be like my other reflector. I was just wondering if any thinks it wouldnt be as good as any other type of T-5 reflector.

Even better than parabolic shape is a parabola with a peak in the center that comes back toward the bulb - like a spread out 'M' shape. A plain parabola without the inward peak has more re-strike loss than the 'M' SLR/SLS reflector shape.

Im not aware of the reflectivity of the solar tubes, but Id venture to say itd be very close if indeed you were able to fabricate an exact replica.

i am thinking of buying this light setup... will be using it on a 55gal or a 75 gal and plan on having sps, lps, anenome's eventually and maybe a few clams.... what to you guys think? am i too ambitious?

I had a Current PC light for a while and wasn't really excited about it. That said it was a while ago and not a Nova setup. I didn't see if that light offered individual reflectors or just one big one. Individual reflectors are best! I recent bought a T5 retro kit. Here is the link http://innovativelights.com/ret-t5-254.html you don't get a fan or moon lights, but probably a little nicer set-up if you have a canopy. Also I bought moon lights on e-bay for $20, so don't let that hold you up.

4 X 54w

For 5 dollars less you could have a topnotch system with the same amount of bulbs, yet better reflectors and a much cooler system as well. You wouldnt be too ambitious at all,but if you do go with a 75g;you may want to consider a 6 bulb fixture for sps and clams. But at the very least this will keep your critters well lit and in good health.:)
