The T5 Q&a Thread

Hi, I been following this thread for some time and I'm considering t5 for a dominant sps tank. My current tank is a 58g with 1x250w 14kde and 2x95vho actinic. My tank so far is coloring up nicely but I feel that I need another 250w to make the take look more even and to color up the sps on each side of the one I have now.
Currently I'm running the halide for 9hrs and the actinics for 11hrs.
Here a pic of it now:

I'm thinking about 6x39 tek retro with icecap reflectors from reefgeek.

What do you think? Should I be running all six bulbs a certain photoperiod? Thanks for the help!

Hi,

I plan to order a t-5 retro for my 55, the sunlight supply kit, as I don't see the need to overdrive. Should I upgrade to the SLR reflectors? I see they are only a few bucks more each. also, I plan on using the following bulb combo:

(front)------blue+------sun------?------blue+----(back)

what should I use for the 3rd bulb? I'm looking for a versatile lighting setup. I don't have any corals yet, 'cept for some shrooms (dark cave waiting for them..). Sorry if this has been covered, but I've been following along and got a bit confused with the new bulbs available. Thanks for any advice.

For the price it is alsmot crazy not to get the IC reflectors. I would use Aquablue for the last lamp.

Just bought a used AquaMedic T5 unit for my other tank, any surgestions to what bulb combination I should go with?

Depends on how many lamps and the look you would like.

four lamp unit.

For reference if have 2-Aquablue and 2-Blue Plus with the IceCap retro kit on my 90

Not sure if its been mentioned before or not, but it looks like the Nova series has come out with a new retro that does indeed have individual reflectors- http://www.championlighting.com/home.php?cat=692

On another note, anyone know if Arcadia t5 lamps are sold online in the us anywhere? Arcadia has some of the coolest accessories for t5 too, but the TOTM this month is using the arcadia lamps an I think its one of the nicest looking colors I've seen- not to say that its like that in real life (the whole camera, moniter color diff. argument), but its enough to make me wanna get the bulbs.

hey grim i have a question for u. ive had some helios t-5s for about 5 years but theyjust keep going out and im tired if dealling with it so i want to get a good light system but i def want to stay with t-5s but i want to be able to keep any thing will a Tek 6-54w fixture work to keep sps?

Those look just like the Coralvue T5 retros, I heard there are some reliability issues with the ballasts but they would probably be worth a shot depending on how good the lamps are.

I haven't seen the Arcadia stuff in the US.

4 lamp Tek fixture is all you can fit and all you will need over a 55. The 6 lamp unit will waste a lot of light from the first and 6th lamp. You might look at www.aquactinics.com they have a 5 lamp T5 unit that looks good.

HI Grim
first - let me thank you again for your advice on the T5's. My tank & corals are doing great.
Do you know anything about a new T5 true actinic?

Haven't heard of it. You know a brand name?

ok I was going to get the 4 light tek light, and the a friend of mine has a scratch and dent 8 bulb tek light. is this going to be too much? reefgeek has a acrylic sheild that is 34-3/4 X 15-3/8. i assume thats the actual size of the opening? thats no a problem. but on my 50 gallon, 36"X18" tank, I have a acu-c remora hang on that might interfer. whdda ya think? too much?
