Hello Grim!

How would you set up the following lamp mix for an 8 lamp fixture?

4 Pure actinic : DD
2 blue plus : ATI
2 aqua blue : DD
2 sundaylight : DD

Thank you

this may have already been covered but what the heck

Does anyone have PAR readings from any of the t5 bulbs? im adding 2 54 watt tubes to my current 150watt metal halide system for added PAR and I want to know which bulbs to use to get the best PAR without being too yellow

That is going off a list of lamps already owned. for your 6 lamp unit hit www.reefgeek.com and get the following

Front

UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue
UVL Aquasun
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue Plus

Order a GE Daylight as an extra so you can try out different combinations.

Thanks Grim Reefer it sounds as if you have answerd the same questions a 100 times but I for one thank you.

now off to find suggestions for a good skimmer for my tank.

Hey guys where do you think has the best prices on these units. I found an ebay store that has the Tek 36" 6 lamp unit for $295 and free shipping.

http://cgi.ebay.com/TEK-LIGHT-T5-HO...4111796QQihZ003QQcategoryZ46314QQcmdZViewItem

is this a good deal? also i heard a rumer tek was going to be using ive cap style reflectors soon. does any one know anything about that?
try these 2, www.specialty-lights.com , under aquarium lighting , or www.premiumaquatics.com , under lighting.

Premium Aquatics looks like the same price as the link i provided but the ebay one has free shipping.

If sunlight supply could make a reflector as good as Ice Cap's I don't think they would have had their lawyer send Ice Cap a letter demanding they halt production of the SLR reflector.

Aquactinics makes a nice 5 lamp T5 fixture with active cooling which increases the output of the lamps. The reflectors in the fixture are about equal to Ice Cap's. Not sure they can compete with seeds price though.

what would you recomend for a 36"x24"x24" BB tank. Right now i have 1 clam on the bottom and a mix of sps lps and softies. I want to switch to a mainly SPS tank. I would pay more money for a fixture that would use less watts and more par. I am really trying to optimize my tank for electricity consumption.

Good reflectors and it is designed to sit right on the tank which helps a lot.

I would either do that or go with Ice Cap retro T5's (6 lamps)mounted in a canopy. If a canopy is out do that fixture or a 8 lamp unit from th other guys if they still make them.

Zaphod,

After much reading and investigation, I believe that T5's will be effective on a reef like yours (I am putting togather a 90gl 24" deep tank w/T5s as well). I think, at this point, we must be mindful of the bulb combo and placement of the SPS and clams. I have the EXACT questions you do regarding energy costs and par.

Grim contributed heavily with great information regarding T5's in another thread. In short, the par readings that Grim measured, with appropriate bulbs, ballasts and reflectors indicate that we should be able to do what you are talking about and I am most assuredly going to try very soon. I belive that it is possible to run a T5 SPS tank with some clams as well. The clam on the sand bed will be the question to be answered...

Again I posed the EXACT question a while back. No one has claimed to have put a clam on the bed of a 24" deep aquarium with T5's. There were those with MH set-ups that stated their doubts. I think all that remains is to try it. I am planning a 5-6" DSB (therefore putting the clam some 20" +/- from the lamps) and will try exactly that, but will be prepared to move it up in the tank if need be.

On exact lights after much searching reading here and other places I think Aquatinics probably makes the best units for the price that I have found. IMHO
There is quite a difference in the par levels achieved vs. reflectors. He claims (Tom) to have had good success with SPS corals and T5's. At this point, I am convinced and I have ordered a unit from them. Great customer service. I will post in the future as to my findings, albiet some time from now.

FWIW

I am thinking of adding sand for that very reason. I am auditing my tank and trying to pick everything to be more efficiant. do you think it would be best to runn it without the canopy?
