The T5 Q&a Thread

Trying to use T5's over a 4 foot tall reef tank would be an absolute waste. You would need to run at least 20 rows of lamps and still wouldn't be able to keep even low light corals in the lower part of the tank.

For an odd sized tank like a pentagon a halide would probably be better for covering the odd shape.

Hey grim what bulb combo would make my corals pop with more deep bright colors like all the t5 tanks I see. I'm running 3 d&d 40/60's and 3 450 actinics. All on 6 bulb tek retro.

thanks,

The UVL lamp has a little more blue to it. It seems to help pop pink and purple a tad better than the actinic 03 but IMO either should be used with actinic plus or blue plus lamps.

I agree with Grim. My plan for a more 'colored' in T5 tank was to change my current setup of 2xaquablue, 2xblue+, 2xtrueactinic03 was to swap out the aquablues for two GE 6500K/sun bulbs. After seeing the results on a friends tank where he only uses 1:1 of GE 6500Ks to blue+, I want to change a bit. Sure, my tank looks nice and blue, but my corals are all just that... blue and green maybe. My buddy had the similar thing happen on his large 150g as well. He used to use 2x250wattMH 20,000Ks at each end, and a 400watt Radium in the center, with two rows of VHO actinics. The tank looked nice, bluer than anything I have ever seen... but none of his corals stood out. I have similar experiences with my pheonix bulbs.... very blue, great output, and great growers, but thats all. The corals all look sterile. He swapped out the lights for a 6' maristar... 3x ushio 14,000K 250wattDEs and T5s running blue+ bulbs. The tank has really come alive... corals that once looked plain and nothing under the blue light are showing other vibrant colors... its a complete turnaround.

I have a theory. For a good decade now, the quest has been for bluer light. We started with 6500K bulbs as the bluest, and while that was good, we wanted less of a urine look, and more 'deep blue sea'. We used actinics, and cheered when the first 10,000Ks hit the market. But perhaps we have gone too far now. Many have gone after bulbs that have loads of blue and actinic (14,000Ks and 20,000Ks) and often very little of everything else.

The pheonix 14,000K... loads of blue, but little else. The new Solaris LEDs... very blue... even the white LEDs have a spectral curve mostly in the blue spectrums. While this gives off great PUR (PAR is available radiation, and PUR is the radiation that is used), it doesnt stimulate the pigments very much. Its my inderstanding that the pigments are to sheild the coral from excessive light levels in specific spectrums. So while very blue bulbs and actinics will help our blue and green corals 'pop', they dont stimulate the pigments that would reflect red, yellow, orange, etc...

The bottom line is that while I have been running my tanks very blue these past few years and getting a tank that looks more pleasing and blue... the corals have faded into the background. Everything is blue. The corals have no need to show their red and warmer pigments because there is no light in these spectrums to reflect/sheild.

Just keep this in mind when you are selecting bulbs... try to represent a broad spectrum... all blue or something and your corals might not look so hot.

Hahn, Check locally for GE or Phillips 3000K or 5000K lamps. I've been setting up the new tank and havent tried the 5000K yet but a friend took one and is running it with a 3000K, a couple actinics and bluepluses and is in love with the look. The lamps should be dirt cheap if you can score them at home depot or lowes.

In my 5 lamp mix the 3000K is perhaps a little much, it definatly warms up the look. The pink coraline actually looks pink. I like the UVL Aquasun for the same reason, has the pink hue to it.

That does raise a question... I already have the older GE 6500Ks, so thats what Ill use for now. But in the long run, what bulb looks the closest to it (since I hear this bulb is no longer made by GE) color and output wise?

ATI had a nice one but they changed it to. Right now the Giesemann midday is probably the closest. I think there must be something they were using that is not enviro friendly.

i have 8 of the GE 400 watt bulbs.they are 4K and burn extremely bright and alot whiter light then i thought they would be.they dont seem to be yellow at all.if i had a tank i could use them on i would.been trying to sell them with some new ballasts that i have.plus side to these bulbs is they are only 30 dollars new at an electrical supply house.

You might try advertising them in local reef club forums. Selling a 4K is going to be tough unless people can see how white they look.

I have been running T5's since the beginning of my tank (18 months) and I have to say that I believe my corals have lost coloring. I have tried all kinds of bulb combo's but my corals have still lost their coloring. I have even taken a frag of one of my corals and given it to a friend that runs MH's, the coral colored right up within 2 months. Before you ask, I am running a calcium reactor, I do 40 gallon monthly water changes so water parameters are not the issue.

So I am going to change to MH's.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I have a blue plus, aquablue lamps and looking to replace the other two current lamps. thinking of getting UVL sa and not sure on the other bulb. I like a little blue look, but looking for a full spectrum bulb, something to help with the pinks and yellows. any suggestions. Thanks

Been following along and have a question. Does anybody have any opinion about the ATI Powermodul (4 bulb or 6 bulb)fixture? Reefgeek says he's getting them in soon(next month or so) and they are a great fixture for my 90 gallon AGA(48x18x24H). How would they compare to the Aquactinics 5 bulb, Tek Light 6 bulb or retro?

Were talking T5 bulbs here, not halide.

I have a quick question guys. My 4' bulbs are packed away right now, but I need the exact outer dimensions, or, 'end-to-end' of these bulbs with the water proof endcaps on them. I am making a new tank that is going to be 42x36x20"h, and rather than run 36" bulbs, I can run 4' bulbs diagonally. The number of these bulbs will depend on exactly how long they are. As is, I can do 6 bulbs if they are around 46". 4 bulbs if they are around 48"

The ATI PM is way cool. a 4x39 put over 160 worth of PAR to the sand of my 18"tall tank. I really don't know how they would compare to the Aquactinics but they have to be higher output than the Tek do to active cooling. The ATI output dropped from 160 to 89 when I shut down the fans. The retro in my 14" tall canopy picks up around 25% when I use a fan. The Tek is well vented but there isn't any way it can keep the lamps as cool as a retro in a big canopy.

I have. My brains have lost a little color, now that I have them partially shaded the color is slowly returning. T5's pack some SERIOUS par and mine are in a bb tank I now run 4 instead of 6 on a 75. My tank is now all LPS and carpet anemones. T5's just pack alot of par alot more than people think. Mothra's thread is very interesting.

Okay, thanks. I will be able to use 4x54wattT5s with dual 250watt halides then. I was leaning that way anyways because I would like to try the new Lumenarc DE fixtures... and 6 bulbs running diagonal might not cut it.
