T5: Helio vs. Tek
Hi, I'm want to light my 29g with T5. I'm very impressed with tek's review however they don't make any 30" lights. I recently found out that helios do make 30" T5 but haven't really heard much about them. How do the Helios compare to tek? Is there a difference between the two bulb brands in terms of par and performance? Also, are the helio reflectors as good? any other recomndtions for a 30" setup

If Helios has the T5 lll in the 30 watt lamps then they would be good. Those lamps are 29" long.

I think it would be fine. Depending how big the coral is you might not get great growth.

Hey Grim - I recently added a hydrophona to my tank, I was wondering if I could place it on the bottom of the tank (its a 65G 36x18x24) with my current Tek T5 6x39W setup? All the bulbs are ATI except the 6500k.

FRONT
B1: Blueplus
B2: Aquablue
B2: GE 6500K
B2: Blueplus
B2: Aquablue
B1: Blueplus

Schedule so far is:

10AM B1 on
12PM B2 on
2PM B1 and B2 on
6PM B2 on
8PM B1 on
10PM off

So Grim... any test results on the Tek with / without fans yet? Sam hasnt posted anything... maybe he 'discovered' something.

Alright Grim, my turn.
I'm ready to order lights for the 180G. I'm leaning toward not reusing my 48" T5s from the 90G and getting new 60" instead. What is the preferred lamp combo for a 6x60" setup? I'll be using IC SLR. 12 36" I guess. I have to contact IC and see what the deal is they offer on that. I think I like the look a little bluer than you do. Give me a couple of good combos.

Thanks

My favorite was running 2 blue plus, a pure actinic, GE daylight and 2 aquablues.

If you get the ATI lamps the Aquablues look a tad bluer than the D&D's I ran. It is a fairly blue look. I had them set like this

Front
BP
PA
GE
AB
BP
AB

BP
PA
BP
GE
AB
AB

would give you a slightly bluer look. If you want a blue look swap a Aquablue for a Blue Plus.

hahnmeister,

The SLS forum is gone. I guess Sam didn't have a chance to post his findings, I was so looking forward to seeing how bad my glass shield is hurting my light output. But, the trade off is I have my fixture about 4" from the top of the tank and don't have to worry about saltspray damaging my reflectors or causing an electrical problem with the standard end caps. I do have a fan blowing into the gap between the aquarium and Tek which seems to keep the fixture cool, but I know this doesn't get any air to the bulbs. Lets see if Sam comes through anyway and posts something to RC (unless of course SLS has prohibited him from discussing their products on this site).

Grim, as always, love your work.

Maybe later today.

I have a 55 gal long and I'm still debating between the 5 bulb canopy from Aquactinics or the 4 bulb IC retrofit

With the IC retrofit, what is the max height I can go above the waterline and do I need to place some sort of a shield over the bulbs if I place it 4-5 inches above the water?

I appreciate any input and Wow there is a lot of information within this thread. Thanks for all the advise

Grim Wondering whats up with the Tek I know you used to like them I am just wondering what changed your mind on it. I have a Aquatronics 72" got the 2nd one lol and love it. but what's up with Tek.?

Thanks Grim...I was thinking about future upgrades so that's why I was looking at the IC retrofit additionally I have a wooden canopy.

What is your reasoning for not choosing the IC  I have actually seen the aquactinics hood on a 55 so I'm definitly not against it, just asking for the master's opinions I guess :D

Grim,

I had ask you about my 75gal T5 set recommendatiion before and this is what you recommend:

ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL Aquasun
ATI Aquablue
UVL Actinic White
ATI Blue Plus

But can I go with the following bulbs below?:

Giesemann Aquablue+ 54W 48" x 3
Giesemann Midday 54W 48" x 1
Giesemann Actinic+ 54W 48" x 2

Will this work? and will this be enough for SPS, LPS, clams, etc.???

Just don't appreciate the SLS business tactics. They are attempting to muscle Ice Cap out of the reflector business by threatening to sue them.

The IC system would be a little on the intense side. On a 24" tall tank a 4 lamp IC system pops 183 at the sandbed. If all you want is SPS, Clams and anemones then the IC is great.

The GManns will work, just a little less output.

According to Sam, the redesign of their new Teks was due to the reflectors which were too close to another company's design, so SLS was forced to change.

Thnx.
Is the 6500K GE still good? I thought they changed them. If so, A DD Day instead?
