The T5 Q&a Thread

Hey guys, I just set up a new nano last night. The tank measures 8" x 8" x 24". I currently have a pair of 65w bulbs over it, an actinic and a 10,000k. I've got my heart set on a maxima clam and acropora, montipora, and such. Would 2 T5's on a wrkhorse 3 or 3 T5's on a workhorse 5 be better? And what bulbs would you reccommend? I prefer the bluer look, but also want some good par. My 2.5G has two 18w PC's, an actinic 450nm and a 6500k, and I really like the look and growth they give me.

A couple T5's should work. ! would run a blue plus and Aquablue.

Henry, do you ever have any issues with this unit since the fans only come on with the 4 bulbs, does the unit still operate pretty cool when the 2 bulbs for dusk to dawn are on with no fan. Tom at Aquactinics said this is totally fine because it dissipates the heat well with just the two lamps on. I was just wondering your opinion. Also what bulbs do you use/recommend. Thanks."

Grim has posted some pretty good lamp options. I am using ATI's and UVL's

I run my actinics and super actinics in the 4 lamp portion and my daylights on the the 2 lamp portion so my fans are on for the duration since my "dawn / dusk" option is on throughout the photo period

I have a chiller but it rarely comes on. (its cool now here in VA) but I have not noticed an appreciable difference in temps. The (Solar Flare) unit stays slightly warm to the touch with all the lights on and the fans running.

Would three be too much? I have a spare workhorse 5 that I can rig up.

Nah, in fact, if you really wanted to have a clam in there, I would suggest it. I would then run a combo of 1xsun/6500K bulb, 1xblue+, and 1x UVL Super Actinic. The extra actinic will help balance out the sun bulb, but the sun bulb will light that tank up. Just keep in mind that you will only have one light field in that whole tank: BRIGHT! So you will be 100% SPS and clams.

Funny, I was thinking about making a custom nano of those dimensions just so I could have a desktop nano that used T5s. I was just going to have 2 bulbs though, and not try to keep high-light SPS and clams in it though... Please let me know how it goes with that tank. Im interested.

The awesome thing is that the tank is off the shelf by some no-name company, 1/4" glass, thick frame, and very clean silicone job. I think the brand is aqua-aquarium? Here's a pic:

So only SPS and clam huh, What If I acclimate with screens? I'd really like a few rics or zoos in there too.

Grim, can't find the thread on your ATI Powermodul par readings. I believe you had the 4 lamp fixture. I believe you said you did the readings with the splash shield in place. How does that fixture compare with the Aquactinics 5 lamp fixture, thought the ATI was brighter just want to make sure. Thank you very much.

Thanks Grim, you did say that the ATI still runs pretty cool with the fans right? What speed did you generaly run the fans, someone said they are multi speed? I agree with you on the fan situation with the Solar Flare so I am not going with that. You are definately an asset to this forum, and as always I appreciate you help. Thanks.

Grim, I actually think I may have found a solution for the fan issue with the Solar Flare, so I will probably go with that. I absolutely love the bulb combo you recomended for my 5 lamp Aquactinics: 2 blue pluses 1 super actinic, 1 aquablue, and 1 aquasun. What bulb would you add to make up 6 lamps. I figure for dawn/dusk I will use 1 blue plus and 1 super actinic. I don' really want it to be much bluer. I am sure whatever you recommend will be great. Thank you very much.

Hey Grim or Hahn,

I'm thinking of putting t5 over my refug. using the Helios light set up from Premium Aquatics. Using 2 of the single bulb setups. Do you thing a 3000K along with a aqua blue or blue plus would work or just go with a single 3k. It's a display refugium so was kinka wanting a little color.........

Thanks

I am running a single 24 watt Helios daylight over my fuge and it has been great. You MUST use the Helios brand lamps in those fixtures, the lamps are a little longer than the rest.

Add another Aquablue. What are you doing about the fan?
Grim, if you think it will not overcool the 2 dusk/dawn lamps I will put the two fans to come on with them. If need be I will see if there is a way to have 1 fan come on at a time. I am just going to go ahead and rewire. Thanks again.

Be aware that they will void your warranty if you rewire the fixture. Can't be too hard to do and I can't see why it would cause an issue but...

Grim, arent those ballasts in the ATI powermodul just OSRAM's? OSRAMS do tend to run at a higher mhz than what we get here in the US (Triads/Advance). Its kinda like the Icecap, but not so extreme. The wattage to the bulb is the same, but the frequency is much higher. This might account for the greater output.

Ill know next week, I have some on the way. But first I have to find an Advance ballast to compare to.
