The T5 Q&a Thread

Years back I did some research on this with fresh water plants. What I found was that was a definate corelation between the amount of quality lighting and the time duration for optimium plant growth.

Generaly speaking if the lighting cycle was under 6 hours regardless of the quantity growth was a near minimium level. When light were on about 11 hours you could get away with the least ampount of quality light and still get very good growth. If ypou wanted to rate it in watt hours thius is probably where you got the most effecinecy in terms of growth/Watt-hours. If you increased the light cycls from 11 hours there was little gain from the 11 hour pount and actually when you started exceeding 14 hours you even started to see no growth at all on some plants.

Now the big key seemed to be which chemicals the individual plant were using for photosynthesis. Some chemicals liked particular wavelenghts better than others as well as actual quality of life. What would cause actual burns in some plants would be insufficient lighting for other plants.

Corals are very simular while they are not plants in themselves they depend upon internal plant growth to furnish them with nutrements. Yet the is wide range in lihghting needs, in nature some corals grow onlt a meeter or two from the surface while other flourish 100's of meters under the surface. Therefore there lighting needs vary considerably.

Well, 12am to 7:30 am is not going to be a good enough 'down time' for the corals... a mere 7.5 hours of darkness. I run mine from 3pm until 10pm, and if I want the option on certain days of earlier viewing, I can turn on the bulbs earlier and then just leave them on, but 3pm until 10pm is a good amount.

This is killin me!. I thought I had my mind made up to go with the tek retro but that ultra solaris is sweet looking and about $200 more with better bulbs.......I can't decide!!!

Hello, just obtained a 2-54 watt tek retro kit from a friend. Was wondering if it would be possible to run 2-39 watts with the 2-54 watt ballast?

I have a 72" canopy and did not want to stagger the 2-54 watt bulbs.

Thanks for your help!

That extra money you pay over the Tek is money well spent. I have a Tek, but will buy a fauna-marin (2 actually) for the new tank. The Tek is okay, but it doesnt have a fan, and that passive venting isnt enough to keep the heat from robbing a good 10-20% of the output from the bulbs, and who knows how much bulb life. I ended up adding a cross-flow fan and a duct modded acrylic sheild, but its a PITA and kinda 'rigged' looking. My main complaint about the Tek is how easy the raw Aluminum reflectors stain when they get splashed.

The Ultra hits both of these problems right on the head, and then some, so for me... the hundred or so extra is worth every penny. Some of the older Tek units I see are useless POS lights now... stained and corroded all over. Its kinda like buying a chevy or a honda... the honda might cost a bit more, but you know it will last longer and run better. And when it comes to resale... the Tek is just like a Chevy in that its almost worthless...lol.

Now you're hittin me where it hurst!!..I won't buy japanese...Buy American!!!..............lol

I will prolly go with the ultra.....need to sell some paintball stuff!

Thx

If you have a 92 cu. in. HPA system, I would buy that for my Angel G7 Fly...lol

FWIW, the Fauna-Marin is made in Germany, not Japan.

sorry...i got a 68/4500.....and an ironmen timmy....

if there were some american made lights that were good...i would buy them first....;)

I just bought a used aquatinics 5x39w fixture it came with these bulbs
2-uv super actinics
2-uv actinic white
1- ocean pro
what order should they be in?
I am going to acclimate from 2x96w pcs. I am going to run 3 bulbs for a week and start adding other bulbs at 1 hour per week. Does this sound like a good acclimation? How long should I be running my light period total? 8hrs?
thanks
scott
