I am retrofiting a TEK one into my 75 gallon tank. My question is where do i put the ballast?

Have room on the backside of the canopy?

Yes, i have room in many places, i just want to know what place i should put it in that is the safest and best. So im guessing the backside of the canopy?

Hello everyone! I posted this as a separate thread, but was not able to get a response. Hopefully, someone here will be willing to reply.

This is regarding the URI Super Actinic Bulbs.

For those of you who have had the benefit of seeing both URI Super Actinic bulbs in VHO and T5: is the VHO bulb visually "more purple" than the T5 bulb? And accordingly, is the T5 bulb "bluer" than the VHO? I am asking about the coloration of the water column, and not coral fluorescence.

Thanks in advance.

I am clueless about NO T12's. I would guess than swapping one of those pink lamps for a blue would get you where you want to be. The Purple is likely an actinic. Coralife used to make a pretty good NO Actinic
Thanks Grim! At least now I have an idea of something to try!

I have run tanks using a combo of VHO Aquasuns / Super Actinics and also now have a tank running 54W T5 Aquasuns / Super Actinics and the VHO lit tanks definately had more of a purple look to them IMO.

Will this give me the fluorescent pop as well?

Sure, you might want to move the rear actinic up a couple places, no point in having it light up the back side of the corals you cant see.

Grim can you recommend another lamp to replace the Super Actinic. I was told that, that lamp is purple. I really do not want my tank looking purple. I am looking more into the white/blue look. But mostly white.

The Super Actinic is less purple than other actinics. If you want a more neutral color use a GE 6500K daylight instead of the aquasun, that should get you there. Order an extra Aquablue as a spare lamp and you can try slipping it in place of one of the blue pluses to see if you like that look better.

Does anyone have a link that can tell me what colors equals what spectrum. I was looking at reefgeek, but still confuse.

1000k= what color
11000k= what color
12000k= what color
6000k= what color
6500k= what color

Sorry, don't have a link, but in very simplistic terms, the higher the Kelvin (K), the more blue the light will appear. The lower the Kelvin, the more red it will appear. The ones in the middle, like the 6000 or 6500K are actually going to look pretty white. I think the lights most people have in their houses are in the 4000-5000K range. The 10,000-12,000K are going to have a bluish tinge, while the 3000K that seems to be quite popular of late should have a reddish tinge (haven't seen one in person). Hope that was at least a little bit helpful.

edit:
By the way, as I understand it, all of those bulbs are technically "white" light, since they're full spectrum. You probably already know this, but just didn't want you to expect to see pure red or blue light coming out of any of these bulbs (except of course, actinics).

The wiring configuration is why I listed the lamps in those positions.

2&6 for dusk dawn with an actinic and blue plus
1,4 &7 early and late daylight with 2 blue plus and 1 Aquablue.
3&5 bright midday light with daylight and sun lamps.

I'd run the Dusk/dawn pair 12 hours, the early/late daylight for 10 hours and the midday 6~8 hours

Hi Grim,

I was following your bulb suggestions for the 48" Constellation T5 ...
------
Front
Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL Aquasun or GE 300K (reefgeek has them)
Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
Blue Plus
Aquablue
------
... I can readily get ATI and Giesemann bulbs, but not the URI/UVL or GE bulbs.

Could you suggest Giesemann bulbs to substitute for the URI/UVL and GE ones?

Thanks for all your super help throughout RC.

-Jim
