Hi Grim

I have thie same bulb configuration. I exchanged my Torch which was a brownish color with a tint of green at my lfs ( not good looking )When he put it in his tank with 2 x 250 14K metal halides and 2 03 vho actinics it perk up to a beautiful metalic green color.
Is it the halides or the actinics who caused this and is there a way to achieve this with T5's?My bulbs are 9 months old BTW.
Thanks

If you have the exact same lamps take out the Pure Actinic and 1 Aquablue and add 2 UVL Super Actinics. That is going to get you about as good as you can get.

Your friends tank gets the result of the combination of the 14K halides and the VHO actinics. You really should be able to get close to the same color with the T5's.

If I have my SPS at the back, will the bulb combination change? Will 3000ks or 6500ks help anywhere?

If I get a 4 bulb instead, would this be a good choice?

Grim,

I just bought a Ultra Solaris 6x39w fixture for my tank. The tank itself will be 36x28x18. I just have a couple of questions regarding replacing the VS ballast with the Osram ballast.

1. Do I have to cut the existing wires leading into the VS ballast in order to remove them?
2. If not how do I get them out?
3. I noticed the Osram ballasts are rated for 2x54w bulbs. Does this mean I will be overdriving my current 39w bulbs once I install it? And what kind of things should I expect from doing this? Will it give me better performance? Also will I be able to just go ahead and buy 54w bulbs later?
4. Would 6x54w be too much for a tank so shallow? I plan on keeping it SPS dominated.
5. And lastly should I even bother swapping the ballasts? Will there be any benefit?

Thanks for your time and sorry for all the questions.

Mike

I wouldn't put a aquaflora in front. Swap it with the super actinic

If you have both a VS ballast and a Osram ballast pop the top off the cases and look at the name on the printed circuit boards.;)

Pushing the little buttons above where the wires go into the ballasts will release them.

I wouldn not change the ballasts.

4. I am going to go with 4x54 watt in a 12" tall, 5 foot long, and 20" wide 65 gallon tank. I asked around, and it should be good for SPS.

Grim,

have chance to check the new bulb UVL 14000 K Aquablue yet? curious about that bulb.

Hello Grim
Any comments on the Solaris Led 20k unit ?
Would Actinic supplementation still be necessary.
For the $ I would think that it does it all.

Thanks for a reply

Also when I make my canopy for T5s, how high should the T5s be off the water? Should the canopy be open backed?

Do what you can to have the lamps 4 to 6 inches above the water. I personally like open backed canopy.
