The T5 Q&a Thread

I have been reading this thread on and off for quite some time and it always seems to be suggested to go with 6 or 8 T5 bulb setup - for example with a 80 gallon tank. I have been running my 80 gallon tank, 2 T5 Retro Tek lamps (blueplus and 6500K ) with mushrooms, zoanthids and star polyps for the last couple of years with no problems. Would more light really make that much difference (more growth or healthier corals)? I was thinking about adding 2 more T5 Tek lamps - want to get into more corals like leathers, and bubble-tip anemenies (sp?). Would 2 more lamps be enough? Does a super actinic add much heat to the tank as other lamps? thanks for any input.

Couple more lamps would let you move to leathers easy enough. The super actinic will add about the same amont of heat as the other lamps.

Awesome!

Awesome!

Managed to get the other ballast installed & wired.... looks fantastic.

Thanks Grim

Hi T5 gurus... I am trying to figure out which bulbs to get for a 6x39 watts set up for a 65g tank, can please you give any recommendation?

Here is a unique configuration for your arrangement skills....

Its for a corner tank... the hood will be a triangle, point in the corner two legs coming out then a leg going across the front of the tank. Each leg will have a 24W T-5 bulb setup. In the center of the triangle will be a 24" hood with a 250W MH and 2 T-5 in that.

So 5 T-5 (24W) all together in the setup. I plan on going with a 10K MH bulb so I need the T-5s to handle the coloration.

I'd do a super actinic across the front and a blue plus down each side.

Hi ! Everyone, i'm from France and new to reef-central. I hope U'll pardon me my bad english.

I have a 8x39w T5 light fixture and will add 2x39w
So it will be 10x39w for a 90G tank :

the lights will ignite in 3 times

Front
1 -> First
2 -> Second (30mins later)
3 -> Second (30mins later)
4 -> Third (1 hr later)
5 -> Third (1 hr later)
6 -> Second (30mins later)
7 -> Second (30mins later)
8 -> Third (1 hr later)
9 -> Third (1 hr later)
10 -> First

Here is the bulbs that I have atm :
4 ATI Aqua blue special
2 OSRAM 67 Blue (same blue as the ATI Blue Plus)
2 Philips 6500K (same as the GE 6500K)
8 CHLighting 14000K

can you advise me on theses questions :

1) Which bulbs should I buy to complete the ones I already have, because I know i need more actinic bulbs ?
2) Which is the best combination to have the best growth for SPS/LPS ?

Thx.

English look pretty friggn stellar to me.

I'd look to ad a couple of the KZ Fiji Purple lamps and at least 1 actinic, you should be able to get the Sfigoli Actinic Blue lamp there.

Rather than going through where I think you should put the lamps I would just say to place your specialty lamps like the Actinic and the Fiji purples at the middle of the tank forward so the light they create strikes the viewing side of the corals.

Something like this
Front
1 -> First=Actinic Blue
2 -> Second (30mins later) =Blue Plus
3 -> Second (30mins later) =Fiji Purple
4 -> Third (1 hr later)= 6500K
5 -> Third (1 hr later) = Fiji Purple
6 -> Second (30mins later) Aquablue
7 -> Second (30mins later) Blue Plus
8 -> Third (1 hr later) = Blue Plus
9 -> Third (1 hr later) = 6500K
10 -> First = Blue Plus

Just play around with different mixes and have fun.

a question i could not find an answer for:

can i power 4 24" bulbs with a 2x54 t5ho ballast? the specific ballast is a sylvania quicktronic qtp 2x54t5ho/unv psn.

Sorry if this isn't the right thread for this. So I just got an Aquactinics 36" TX5. I love the fixture, and I plan on running it flat on the tank without the risers so it acts as a bit of a cover. The problem is, on this AGA 40 breeder it scares me a bit. It just sits on the lip of the tank, and if it was bumped, it could easily slide off one end, and the other straight into the tank (I know this, because I did it once already, luckily the tank was empty). I asked in the Aquactinics forum, and apparently they are coming out with a set of brackets to secure it to the tank for people not using the risers. In the meantime, I'm going to be paranoid about this. Have any other Aquactinics owners who don't use the risers noticed this, and have you come up with anything to secure the fixture from sliding side to side on top of the tank?

Also, I'm sure this has been mentioned 5000 times, but I can't find the right words to search on. How long should I run the bulbs in my Aquactinics TX5 before I replace them? Say 9-10 hours a day photoperiod.

Grim, Do U know the ATI Actinic and the ATI Pro color ?

ATI Actinic is OK but I like the UVL Super Actinic better. Never heard of the Pro Color.

Until something better comes along grab a couple of acrylic towel bars from home despot of Loews and sit the fixture on them with the bars running from the front to the rear of the tank. You could probably just grab one bar and cut it in half.

I would change the lamps at around 1 year.

Here is what i found about ATI Pro color, it looks like the fiji pink.

ATI Pro color

And about the UVL super actinic I think it's available only in the US. Do U know other actinic bulbs as good as the UVL, available in Europe. I can't find the Sfiligoi actinic either. :mad:

You probably should keep it off the surface an inch or two at least, for safety reasons as well as ventilation. Splashing could shorten the life of the fixture in a number of ways.
