Grim, could I do a 6 bulb 5' T5 retro over a 72Lx20Wx24H mixed reef? And if so, what bulb combination would you recommend?

Dave

grim, which is the better actintic bulb the UVL SA or the Sfiligoi SA???
I've heard good about both. looking for the most "pop" out of my corals.
Thanks

Hi Grim.

How deep can T5s penetrate to keep clams happy? Maximum overdrive - best reflectors - bulb choice etc...

From what I see in this thread...

20 inches? 24 inches? any deeper than that?

Thanks so much for your insight.

I personally wouldn't say I think one is better than the other. The UVL had more PAR but that isnt really why we run actinics.

I think with a good Ice Cap retro or Solar Flare fixture 30" is doable.

What is this repeated comment about the government being screwed up? Are we here to discuss a hobby, or for some other reason?

It's a signiture line, you don't like it feel free not to read.

I posted about a month ago about a lighting a sixty five gallon, but cant find that part of the thread anymore. Since then I the tank setup has changed a bit so I have a new question.

I have a 90 gallon tank with a canopy and two IceCap 660 ballasts. I am assuming like the sixty five that I can only fit 6 48" reflectors/bulbs above a ninety gallon? Is this how I should set up the lighting? Or would I be better off with 8 24" bulbs?

Also, I asked before, but since I cant find that reply. I like a nice crisp white tank with a nice hint of blue/actinic in it so you get that underwater feel and the coral floresce nicely. What combination of brand/type of bulbs would you recommend for that type of lighting.

Also, my intended stocking list is still a mixed reef with clams, sps, lps, and soft corals.

And one last thing. If you recommend I should overdrive my bulbs could you explain exactly how that works and how to set it up or link me to somewhere that does?

Thanks

Use 6 lamps I would try this to start

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL Aquasun or GE 3000K
ATI Aquablue
GE 6500K
Blue Plus.

Just wire one ballast using the standard 4 lamp diagram and the other for 2 lamps and use it for dusk/dawn. Get 2 cooling fans and have one blowing into the canopy on each so they are each blowing down the row of endcaps. That will keep the lamps from overheating.

I am a bit confused on the bulb selection. I am going to go with a 90 in which I want to be able to keep some lps down low but it will be mostly sps. I am right in thinking that only the solar flare will do the job? I would say after the sand bed the tank would effectively be 23 to 22 inches deep? I also would like to know what would make a nice lighting combo. I prefer it bluer than whiter. I have still not heard a definitive on the KZ Fiji purple. Is it a bulb I should get in the combo. The dealer is basically a ULV and Geisemen store but I am sure he could get other bulbs or I couuld just get the fixture bulbless.

I run a 4x24 retro kit about 6 inches off the waters surface and
I was wondering how close can I run them before I need some kind of shield ?

Hi Grim,

I have a 105G (48Lx19Wx29H) that I am putting together. I picked up a Teklight 8 bulb fixture at a great price. I am wanting to start off with LPS, eventually moving to SPS and maybe clams. What combo of bulbs would you run on this type of setup? I like a setup that makes the corals pop and is a little blue but not overly so. Can you help me out here? Thanks for your great input!

The Solar flare or the constellation would be the best choices.

For the flare I would use these lamps

Front
Actinic Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL Aquasun
Aquablue ot GE 6500K
Actinic Plus
Aquablue

For the constellation

Front
Actinic Plus
Super Actinic
Aquasun
Blue Plus
GE 6500K
Actinic Plus
Aquablue

If you want to try the fiji purple exchange it for the aquablue.

As long as you have moisture resistant endcaps you can run them as low as you wan't. If you get much below 4 inches you will constantly be cleaning salt spray off the reflectors which will eventually ruin them.
