I run a 4x24 retro kit about 6 inches off the waters surface and
I was wondering how close can I run them before I need some kind of shield ?

As long as you have moisture resistant endcaps you can run them as low as you wan't. If you get much below 4 inches you will constantly be cleaning salt spray off the reflectors which will eventually ruin them.

"Hi Grim,

I have a 105G (48Lx19Wx29H) that I am putting together. I picked up a Teklight 8 bulb fixture at a great price. I am wanting to start off with LPS, eventually moving to SPS and maybe clams. What combo of bulbs would you run on this type of setup? I like a setup that makes the corals pop and is a little blue but not overly so. Can you help me out here? Thanks for your great input!

Ted"

Grim,
what would you say gives better actinic coloration

T12 - 30watt URI super actinic

or

T5 54watt Blue plus

any opinion/evidence?

Havent seen a 30 watt super actinic so i cant say. I know the Blue Plus will put out more light but that doesnt mean it will look better.

Grim i have a tek 4x54 retro. My bulb combo is
(blue+,geisemann midday,giesemann pure actinic 03, blue+)

So far i have the lights pretty far from the tank about 12" ( havent finished my canopy) The problem is that the pure actinic is kind of dull so i see a purple/brown line in my tank. You think if i get the super actinic it will blend in more? Maybe its just to far from the tank now.

Thanks

Ok thanks. Im going to see if i get the super actinic anyway because my true actinic is way to dull. Why do people even put true actinics if the super actinics are much brighter?

I've had my TX5 unit up (only running 3 of 5 bulbs) for 3 days so far and have seen no discoloration from my corals (regarding acclimation shock).

Am I safe to add the other bulbs into the mix or wait a few more days?
If this light was too intense should I have noticed a coral whitening by now?

Grim,

I work at LFS and I can get myself URI bulbs, but none of the vendors we use seem to carry either the ATI bulbs or the GE bulbs. Do you have any recommendations as to good places to order the ATI and GE bulbs from?

Also, for the GE bulbs, with the fact that it's GE and its a normal spectrum plant bulb you recommended, could this bulb potentially be available at somewhere like home depot?

Thanks

Just keep an eye on things and add the other 2 lamps.

ive been told by a few people that my tek 8 bulb fixture is to much light for a 40 breeder im etting up. its going to be an acro only tank. i like 14k-20k look what bulbs would your recomend that would give me good growth color and not bleach my sps

grim, i'm surprised that you don't start up your own website and charge $ with all the questions you answer. This one will probably be easy for ya but i want to make sure. if i'm running 2x250w mh in conjunction with 4x54w t5's and want to replace just the t5's do i need to acclimate the corals to that. Just want to change out the stock current t5 with 2x sfiligoi sa and 2x fiji purples. Thanks, and just put it on my tab.

No Credit shall be extended to anyone:D

You shouldn't need to acclimate for supplimental lighting.

Be a sport and try this

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus

The 75/25 is called an aquablue but it has more of a pinkish hue to it. With the 2 blues and the super actinic you should get a strong 14K halide look leaning to the blue side. Should make softies and LPS glow with all the actinic in those.
