The T5 Q&a Thread

I'm upgrading from a 75 gallon tank to a 265 gallon tank and I'm hoping to carry over my Tek retro fits while adding more.

I have 6 48" bulbs at the moment I was thinking about adding 6 36" bulbs and then stagger them through the canopy like so:

------------------------ ------------------ 48" - 36"
----------------- ------------------------- 36" - 48"
------------------------ ------------------
----------------- -------------------------
------------------------ ------------------
----------------- -------------------------

Will this be enough light over a 30" deep tank?

Thanks
Robb

Thanks Grim

Do you think a splash sheild would be required for the retro if the lights are around 5" above the tank?

Tom at Aquactinics also suggested SPS and clams "higher up" in the tank with a TX5. Any recommendation as to how high up?

I also travel some for business so reducing evaporation is also something I have to consider.

Thanks

5 inches up you wouldn't need a splash shield. With the TX% I wouldn't put any high lighting critters more than half way down.

For evap get a auto top off system

Use Ice Cap reflectors and I would overdrive at least a couple rows of the lamps.

Theatrus

Thanks. Do you have any pics?

Did you mount the fixtures directly to the canopy or on something else which is then mounted on the canopy?

How far from the wall? I have it about 6" to 7" now.

What size fans did you use?

I appreciate the help.

I have about that space, using two clip on desk fans :)

Here is a shot:

I tweaked the setup a little since then, but thats the idea. Note the odd stagger of the bulb nearest the hinge - otherwise the screw will go into the hinge piece.

Due to height and number of daylight bulbs, this setup is pumping more light into the tank than my old 2x250W halides (old halides were 11" above the water on spider reflectors). I have some LPS bleaching problems on the bottom of the tank right now.

Grim,
I am sure you have answered this question, unfortunately my searches did not provide the answer. I was wondering what your suggestion would be for a 92g corner if I were to use all t5's.

I have a few SPS, and would like to continue addins SPS, because the dimensions are 48" in the front and 34" on the sides I am pretty much stuck to 24's along the sides.

What is your standard suggestion for the configuration, including bulb colors?

Also, one more thing, If I were to go with a single 250 mh say around 10K what would be your T5 supplement questions.

Thanks,
Dale

For an odd sized tank a halide is better. You could run a 54 watt Blue T5 across the front and a 24" super actinic on each side to suppliment the halide.

Thanks for the suggestions.

What's the word on the new Tek 2 reflectors?

Reflectors now 3" wide instead of 2."

From Reefgeek
"The new mirror like finish resists potting and staining seen in the original Tek reflectors"

The retrofit kits with the Tek 2 reflectors now costs the same as the kits with the Icecap SLR reflectors.

FWIW There is a clearance sale on the old Tek reflectors at Reefgeek.

Grim, I just measured the inside of the canopy and I will not be able to fit the 54 watt, would you go with a single 39 or 2x24's?

Thanks
Dale

Grim
Do you know anybody who modfied their Tek fixture either by changing reflectors or useing and Icecap ballast ?

I know one guy mounted an Ice Cap ballast remote to a tak hood. Don't know of any other reflectors that would fit.

He just did it to see if it would work which it did. I don't know if he ever put it into service but you would have to have a fan cooling the lamps for sure. You could probably get one of those clamp on units and put it on the back frame of the tank
