Man didnt see that you had posted and i ordered my bulbs i went with.

1 x ATI T5 54 Watt 48" True Actinic 03
2 x Fiji Purple 54 Watt T5 Lamp (KZCLP54)
1 x ATI T5 54 Watt 48" Blue Plus (ATI1013)

Hope these will be ok for coral!

Post pics once you get them in. Should look fine. I aint a fan of the Fiji Purple but that doesn't mean they are bad. I just don't see where they do anything special that other lamps wont.

I acquired a used 125 gallon tank and I woul dlike to have some tangs and corals. Right now I am thinking I would like to get some sps, but may change when the time comes. The tank came with 2 Coralife 36" power compact lights. Each light has 2 96 watt bulbs.
1. what kind of lighting would be best? T5, MH, ect
2. What wattages would i need?
3. Will MH cause the need for a chiller?

Thanks for your advice

If your tank has a canopy reefgeek.com has retrofit T5's that would work. If you want SPS I would get the Ice Cap 8x39 watt T5 retrofit and make 4 rows of lamps using 2 lamps end to end to cover the length of the tank.

Hi Grim,

I currently have PC lights in the form of a Coralife 36 Inch Aqualight Compact Fluor. Retrofit Kit W/ 2-96W Lamps Square Pin retro'ed into my hood. My tank is a 40B with softies, some LPS and beginner SPS. I wanted to upgrade to T5's but I didn't know what kind, what type, what would fit in my hood, etc., and what kind of bulbs I would need for the type of corals i'd be keeping. I would like to keep my lights retro'ed into my hood, it is open back.

Will do that is if i can get my tank to stop looking like a green water culture! i ordered a UV sterilizer im hoping that takes care of it along with skimming of course.(already did a 50% water change didnt help)

Hi Grim,

My 6 bulb fitting came with some chinese sun sun and CH brand globes. i replaced them all i was just curious what sort of PAR you think those chinese bulbs would put out. roughly i mean. half a good bulbs PAR?

thanks

Can't figure out this look

Can't figure out this look

How can I get this look with supplemental T5s and which type of HQI halide?

I have Elos 10K Spectras but could also swap them for these reeflux 12k DE 250 watters I have.

I originally was thinking just the ATI blue plus and super actinic from UVL but wanted to know if there was a bulb that could give it that extra bang...

The elos spectra may make the tank a bit too white/yellow (ballanced with actinics).

Will the Reeflux make it better or do I need a 20Klight and with special T5s?

I will have 4 spots for T5s 39watt.

Thanks again - I have too many lighting issues plus many tanks...
Mike

Hi again,

do you have any PAR readings for the Sylvania lamps?

Sylvania Aquastar T5 (10,000k)
Sylvania Coralstar T5 (Actinic)
Sylvania Gro-Lux T5 (8,500k)

Thanks

So I ending up ordering some bulbs. I just wanted to try something a little different. I'm sticking with the Current 10k, a fiji purple(wanted something a bit different), a Giesemann Actinic plus and a Giesemann Pure Actinic. I'm hoping I like the look. I thought that tank that had the two fiji's two blue pluses looked pretty nice. I'm hoping this will be a little less blue. I can experiment a bit too. There's a shop near me that sells Giesemann T5 bulbs. So if I no likey I can always switch out a bulb.

I currently have two Uri super actinic & two Uri 50/50 bulbs. What would be another 2 bulbs that would give me a good 14k look? These are going on a 120g, and will be lit with 660s. Also Im sure this has been answered a million times, but what is better IYO, icecap or tek2 reflectors?

Thanks Grim, so you recommended this:

blue Plus
ATI Actinic
ATI Pro Color
Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue
Blue Plus

how would this differ
blue Plus
ATI Actinic
ATI Pro Color
Blue Plus
75/25
Blue Plus

Thanks

Grim,
A couple of weeks ago you gave the recommendation for the below config. I definitely love the way the tank looks. Its a 150( 60*24*24), SPS dominated tank with a few softies here and there. I hope the growth is as good as the looks of the tank. Here is the config for all who want to try ..

all 48" 54 watts

Front
Fiji Purple
UVL Super Actinic
GE 6500 or Aquasun (cant determine due to markings worn off)
ATI Blue +
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue +

Thanks Grim for the info!!!

If you are keeping a mixed reef a 4 lamp retro will be fine

Front
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Actinic
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus

Couldn't tell you. Chinese can make good lamps, they just cant do it a lot cheaper than anyone else.

Before you do anything with the halides try 2 blue Plus and 2 Actinic T5's. If that isn't blue enough I would try the Phoenix 14K halides, great lamp.

Don't have PAR readings on those. Sylvania is the OEM for ATI so it is possible those are the same lamps but I don't know for sure.

Ice Cap on the reflectors. Add 2 Blue Plus or actinic plus for the 14K look.

I was wanting to put 4 of these over a 20L. Are these any good, you can get a lot of 10 off ebay for $70

http://cgi.ebay.com/24-T5-10-000K-N...1QQcmdZViewItem

I think they are just t5's not t5hos, what is the difference and if t5 is weaker what can i keep under them

Link is bad but I generally have a low opinion of the no brand Ebay crap. If you are looking at retros check out the Coral Vue's at Custom Aquatics. For fixtures the Nova's Premiere Aquatics sells Finnex.

I missed this thread and posted a question in a new one... I don't have any mix~n~match experience with T5's ... Running the 48" Nova Extreme Pro with stock bulbs. The tank is definitely bright! 18" tall tank and fixture on stock legs.

I was wondering what might be a good bulb combination for this? I have an LFS not too far from here that I know they stock Gieseman bulbs .... so they may have others too. any suggestions for a better look?
