The T5 Q&a Thread

I saw a beautiful SPS only tank today and the guy was runing 1x400w and a 150w MH. this was on a 3x2x2. i was looking at getting another tank for just SPS and wandering what T5 only lighting could do the same.

my tank would only be 36x20x20. we cant get IC660 ballasts here so would any normally driven lights do the job? would i need 6 or 8 retro? what bulbs to get the SPS to really grow and pop

thanks

what number split is this, jeez.

question? i have a 39x6 tek light over my 112 and was wondering if its gonna be enough. my lfs said it would by far not be enough and that i wouldnt be able to put any corals in it. my tank is weird, its a half pentagan with 36 in front and 48 in back.
if i put the light forward and put two 96w pc quads (one on each side of the overflow) behind the t5s then will this do the job?
i really dont want to do this if i dont have to, but if it means the diffrence of corals i can have then ill do it.
thanks

Aaron

Yeah, 6 lamps with Ice Cap reflectors would do it. As far as lamps I would be tempted to try a couple of UVL Aquasuns and 4 Blues

How tall is your tank? People are keeping clams on the sand in 24" tall tanks using 4x39 Tek fixtures. I wouldn't but Ive seen it done.

Unhappy with T5s in LPS Tank. What do u suggest?

have been using T5s on my lps tank and I an not very happy with the color of the tank or corals. It's a 24" 4-bulb Tek fixture. I just can't seem to get that radium look. They are also bleaching out a couple of the chalices. I would like to know what you all are using, those of u with LPS. I moved the chalices over to the radium tank and they look 10x better already. I really think I might scrap the T5 thing. Thoughts?

I have used these combinations: (front to back)

I am looking for a T5 setup for my 65g 36"x18"x24", I am actually liking the ATI 8x39W Powermodule, it's in my budget and absolutely maximizes my size tank (17.5" wide).

With 2x4 control, what would you recommend for bulb choices?

Hey Grim I have been told of some testing you did on different fixtures and that it is posted here somewhere. If this is true can you point me to it?

Thanks

wonder if anyone is burning t5's on a 75, what your set-up is, and is it's performance is? thanks Shannon

Pull the special and try a UVL Aquasun. Once you try that you can play with using the special in place of a Blue Plus if you want a whiter look

1 Pro Color, 1 UVL Super Actinic, 1 UVL Aquasun, 1 ATI Aquablue and 4 ATI Blue Pluses. Set it up so you get a Actinic and Blue Plus (s) as your dusk/dawn.

The info is so spread out I am not even sure where its all at.:D

ATI has about the strongest output. The Aquactinics Solar Flare Probably has the highest output. Aquactinics Constellation will be about equal to the ATI's. TX5 Aquactinics fixture would be next followed by the Tek. Nova Extreme Pro is a little behind the Tek

Lotsa people using them over 75's. Aquactinics TX5 is probably the best all around fixture for that tank.

Thanks! And just for my curiosities sake what would change in the bulb choices if I only went with the 6 bulb fixture?

hello grim, i have read most of this thread and came across something that caught my eye, i am going to buy a 6x54w ATI powermodule and was wondering about the bulbs, well from reading i came across this list
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus
i have two questions,

1- will these bulbs give me good colors, growth,PAR, on my 90 gal mixed reef (70% SPS)
2- since the powermodule lights 2 bulbs on one cord and four bulbs on the other one, which bulbs would go on the 2 bulb side to create a dawn/dusk effect

thanks

sana

Hi Grim,
A couple of questions from someone new to T5's. I'm looking at a tank with dimensions: 66"L x 20"W x 29"H. I'd like to do all T5's for lighting, so I'm thinking some combo of 3' and 2' T5's across the 66" span. My question is from a light and ballast perspective, what do you recommend?

1) How many T5's can I get in a 20" width?
2) I'm looking to use IC660 ballasts so how many (I think they run up to 16' of bulbs each right?
3) I'll be doing a mixed reef, so a bulb layout would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Eric
