Sunlight Supply Tek Lights, What is the diff. between the blue and the black fixtures?

The color

I just kill me

I think the Blues were the limited editions that had better reflectors, those are only in the 54 watt version I think.

one more question ...for a 15 gal tank 2 bulb would be good right or should i go with 3 ??? and for 2 which kind of bulb....thank

3 lamps will get you a better lamp but 2 will work.

I'd do a Blue and Aquablue for 2 lamps.

Hi Grim,

Reefgeek is on backorder for two weeks on the ATI Blue Plus.

They said that the Giesemann 54W Actinic Plus T5 HO Fluorescent is nearly identical.

Would you agree with that or would you recommend something else, or simply waiting?

Thanks,
Grant

Thats fine. Greg doesn't blow smoke just to get a sale which is one of the reasons why I point people there for stuff. I know I am not going to get left with egg on my face because he pulled a bait and switch.

So, I wanted to put a few update pics up for everyone to see how the bulbs burned in for me. These pics are with all 6 bulbs in my fixture on. Two of them aren't fully burnt in, yet (an AquaSun and Giesemann Blue+). But it should be fairly close.

Please note, I tried to color-correct the photos as close as I could, but I cannot represent the pinkish tint to the tank that I see. You can kind of tell looking at the live rock. But the water looks pretty clear, and the sand pretty white. But in person it definitely looks kinda pink from the fluorescent bulbs.

Just actinics (Giesemann Blue+ and UVL Super Actinic):
Again, this has just a hint of purpley-blue in it and is also more intense/saturated in blue, but the color is close. Also, things fluoresce more than they show in the pic.

Thanks for the updated pics MrSpiffy! Tank looks great btw, gotta love those breeders. Those aquasuns must really push out some pink hues?

I'm about to order a similar combo and might get an aquablue in place of the aquasun if it turns out too pink for my tastes. Maybe the 2nd set of lamps just needs a little more time to burn in too.

WRONG!!!

Aquablue is nearly white, in the Geisemann lamps do

Actinic Plus
UVL Aquasun
Actinic Plus

The Actinic Plus is a blue lamp with actinic phosphores. The Aquablue does have actinic properties but the light is nearly white. The Blues will give you better pop and wash out the pink of the aquasun which does a good job at pulling up pink and purple critters.

now you got me confuse!!

is the actinic plus the geisemann brand or??

I've heard that's pretty typical of fluorescent bulbs in general, that they emit a pink hue to the light.. I would like something a bit more white than pink, but I'm not sure if there is such a thing in fluorescents. Unless it's that Super Actinic that's casting the pink everywhere... *runs off for more pics*

Okay, after taking more pics and fiddling with the bulbs real quick, I think it might just be the combination of the AquaSun's and the Super Actinic giving things the pink hue. I turned off the actinics and put on the other four bulbs (2x Giesemann Blue+ and 2x UVL AquaSun), and here's the result. (The results were similar when adding in the one other Blue+, not much difference. I turned the reflector upside down on the Super Actinic so it wouldn't affect the color.) It looks more like a daylight color with more pink hues than blue hues.

The Actinic Plus is Giesemanns version of a Blue Plus ATI lamp. The Aquablue lamps made by both ATI and Giesemann are really more white.

Give the Actinic a little more time to burn in and see if the pink fades more.

I'll definitely do that. I wasn't really planning on changing anything until it's time to swap bulbs, so we'll see how things go. Thanks. :)

Ok, Quick lighting question since this seems to be the lighting Guru thread.

I have a tank with a display area of 30 x 17 x 13

Picked up a IceCap 660 balast with reflectors to build into my hood.

Anyway will this be a good combination of bulbs??

UVL T5 V-HO AquaSun Bulb 10000K

UVL T5 V-HO Super Actinic Bulb

UVL T5 V-HO Actinic White Bulb 12000K

UVL T5 V-HO AquaSun Bulb 10000K

-- Back --

I will be going with a FOWLR at first but want to eventually go to a reef setup. I know theese will be fine with FOWLR but any suggestions for when I start to switch to a reef?

You really don't need to use the Ice Cap ballast. It overdrives the lamps, way overkill for a tank like that. As far as lamps for a fish only running 2 lamps, ATI or Giesemann Aquablues will be plenty.

Hey Grim, you are so awesome to help people out with T5 lighting questions as much as you do, I've read a lot of this thread, but impossible to read the whole thing.

I have a question for ya, imagine that.

For a 125G wide tank with dimensions of 72x24x17 tall.
Could I get away with a 60" 6 bulb retrofit if I wanted to be able to keep most SPS/LPS corals? Specifically I was looking at this fixture on reefgeek....60" 6x80W Tek 2 T5 Very High-Output Retrofit Kit w/ Bulbs....

If this retrofit kit won't work, is ther one you would reccomend?
Thanks!

Awesome! Thanks for the fast reply and bulb reccomendations, one other question. I don't think the kit comes with fans does it? Should I buy one or two fans and should I get the 3" or 4" fan?

As Proof of having read this..... most of this thread i actually read back in 06 grim got banned from this forum. lol

Anyway, to the point of the post;

I just purchased a Tx5 5 bulb fixture aquantinics from a user on this forum whom you actually helped select bulbs for in this thread. My question is, times change and probably so do bulb quality. I pulled this from your conversation with him;

Blue Plus
Super Actinic
Aquasun
Blue Plus
Aquablue

I chose a to remove a blue-plus for the fiji purple. And was recommended to swap the aqua blue for a 50/50 bulb.

Fiji Purple
Super Actinic
Aquasun
Blue Plus
50/50 bulb?

Will this do for clams and soft coral? And is it a stable set of bulbs?
I have an oceanic 58 gallon reef ready tank. Same dimensions as the previous user whom you recommended the above lights for.

Thanks in advance;

The Aquablue IS a 50/50 lamp (Actually 64/40) and the ZFji purple is as well, just a variation. What you have now should be fine.
