Grim reflector question?

I have a Aquatinics Constellation 72" it is about 2 1/2 years old it has the old reflectors on it would it make sense for me to get the new reflectors from Aquatinics Made from Miro Silver ( 98% reflectivity ) aluminum. also how much par increase would i expect from these reflectors.

As long as your reflectors are in good shape I wouldn't do it. The gain was like 5%

hey grim
i asked a question about 40 pages back and your answer got me thinking
i am contemplating a new tank and i am set on the footprint 36 x 36 but haven't decided on the depth yet...
i plan on running 10 bulbs - 8 overdriven on ice cap 660's (cause i have them) and adding a two bulb standard ballast retrofit
questions
1) is there a depth at which overdriving becomes neccessary? in other words if i go shallow 16 - 18" would it be too much light for lower light corals at the bottom or should i go deep, 24", to get more choices for placement
2) how much bulb life do you lose by overdriving - specifically the blue/actinic bulbs. the old wisdom was that actinics (VHO) don't last as long - is that true with t5's as well especially if overdriving them?
thanks in advance

As long as you cool the lamps the overdriving doesn't seem to make a hge difference that I have heard about

As far as tank depth it depends on what you want to raise. For SPS anything over 20" should probably use overdriven retros.

I could move the scoli's down midway, I fooled around in the tank last night and made some possible places. The reason I have them up top is because they weren't doing well on the bottom. I don't know if I could or not. I'm using the feet on the TX5, not the hanging bracket. So 2 of those would be better than 1 of the other?

ey grim! thanks for all the lighting help re the t5's in my system. the pro color red has made the colors look great. made me really happy...

got a question... for additional growth in corals, a 6500k bulb will do the trick, will an additional 54w t5 to my existing 36w bulb increase the growth? or it wont be that much

current set-up
2 54w 10000k t5ho
1 36w 6500k NO
2 54w marine blue t5ho
1 36w 420nm actinic NO
1 36w 460nm marine blue
1 54w pro colout red t5

thanks!

ok guys need some advice. I was going to order a 7 bulb constellation, when i found a nice price on 6 bulb solar flare. So i went ahead and ordered it. I was wondering how these 2 compare? Did I make the wrong choice.

im afraid the solar flare may be too much light for anything other than SPS. I have a 90 gal, that I only plan to have a little SPS, but not too much. Any help would be appreciated.

Just be careful where you place lower light corals

Aussie Acan lighting combo

Aussie Acan lighting combo

Building a new Aussie Acan tank with TX5 T5 Five bulb combination. Trying to an 20k look to pop the colors of my Aussie Acans. What would be best combination? Acan lords of different colors, such as blue, green, orange, red..etc.

I understands that Acan lords love moderate but not too strong lightings.

Second mix should look good. I'd try it.

Hey Grim,

I have a 50 breeder with a 6 bulb 39w Tek fixture. I put a pro color bulb in and don't care for the purple color of the overall tank, but like that it pulls the reds out of the lps. Was wondering if I could get away with taking out the geissman aquablue and putting another ati blue+ in its place to put more blue in to over ride the purple. I am mostly acans and other lps with a few pallies.

Currently F to B:
ati blue+
ati blue+
gieseman aquablue
ati procolor
ati blue+
ati blue+

Other suggestions?

Good morning Grim,

I'm in the process of setting up a SPS dominant frag tank. This tank will be in the same room as my main display tank. My display is lit by an AI LED fixture.

The frag tank is 48w x 18d x 12h. I'm planning on ordering the TEK 4x54 fixture today or tomorrow. I have my choice of the following bulbs for an additional $50.00.

UV lighting 12000K Actinic White
UV lighting Super Actinic (actinic blue)
UV lighting 75.25 14k
UV lighting AQUASUN
Giesemann Powerchrome Actinic Plus
Giesemann Powerchrome AquaBlue+
Giesemann Powerchrome Pure Actinic
Giesemann Powerchrome Midday

I've had a couple suggestions....
giesemann aquablue plus, uvl actinic, uvl actinic white, uvl actinic
Giesemann aquablue plus, Giesemann Actinic Plus, Giesemann aquablue plus, Giesemann Actinic Plus,

Your thoughts and recommendations would be appreciated.

BTW - what is your recommendation for the fixture height...from the water?

TIA,
Dave

You could try it, be a lt of blue. You could try a UVL Aquasun instead of the pro color if that doesn't work. Another option would be using two UVL 75/25's. Either will boost the red a little.
