The T5 Q&a Thread

Sorry mo, you've got me there. I just know that last weekend I helped a friend install some Ice Cap SLR reflectors and he'd purchsed them through reef geek. They appeared to be the same as the SLRs I've previously seen.

I'd give one of the two a call and ask if there is different SLRs available, or wait for someone else to respond here.

GL!

Grim, I just perchased a 72" Aquactinics Constellation fixture to replace may 3x150 MH Sunpod. The fixture has 7x36" bulbs, side by side configuration for a total of 14 bulbs. Thanks

I have just purchased the same fixture. I have a lot of LPS and SPS at the top, softies too. My tank is a standard 180 -- 6x2x2 -- viewable from 3 sides with one island overflow.

I like blue but not too blue, I kind of like the idea of a bit of red -- and I do want colors to pop. So I was thinking two rows of:

ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 50/50 Actinic White
ATI Blue Plus

Feedback Grim?

I am setting up a 4-bulb 48" t5 setup on my 100 gallon tank.Tank dim are 48"long 24"high 20"deep. All 4 bulbs will be driven by an Icecap 660 ballast and Icecap reflectors as well. I was wondering if grim could give me some ideas on what bulbs and wattage (24w vs 39w vs 54w)to use. I want a blue look but not too blue. My tank will be FWLR and Softies. Many thanks.

grim, i have a nova extreme pro fixture and im looking to get new bulbs. i have a mixed reef mostly lps and sps i wnat to make the colors pop as well as get good growth. buls 1 and 4 come on for dusk/dawn and 2,3,5,6 come on after that. thanks for the help

Grim:

you had suggested for my new tx5 these lights:

ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

i placed them in the light so that the first blue plus is towards the front of the tank, is that correct placement? also, with the two switches, i believe the 2nd and 4th light are on one, and the other three on the other switch. with my pc's i would run my actinics for 630a to 6pm and the daylights from (say 9-5ish). i assume i put the three bulbs on the timer i had the daylights on since those are the whiter bulbs? should i run different times with this setup?

Hello,

I am running two iwasaki 14k 250W DE MH bulbs on a 130 gal 30" deep tank. I also have four 24 watt t5s and I need to choose the bulbs.

Which are the best bulbs that would bring out the most interesting color combos in my sps?

Should I combine various bulbs? I really appreciate all your help.

I currently have coralife 36" T5 Light fixture 4 x 39w x2 on my tank. I just bought the 72'aquactinics constellation I just want to know how I should acclimate my tank to this. should I just let these run ike I have the others or is there a process I need to take

Hey Grim..

Doing 8 x 36" in my 72" canopy..

I bought 4 x Giesemann Actinic Plus and 4 x Aquablue..

Decent enough par you think for SPS, anemone, and clam?

If you recommend a change, keep in mind I can only get Giesemann, and not ATi.

also one more thing

my canopy is 15 inches tall
will i be ok retro fitting the lights that high off the water
or think i should bring them down a bit ? if so how far?

( sorry no experiance with t5;s and sps)

I would hang them down closer to the water as much as possible.

Yes it is plastic for now, that is why I am looking into other HO lighting versus halide. Virtual nuc meltdown would not be good.

Can you remove the plastic?

I am looking at changing my current T5 reflectors to icecaps but i am not sure about which icecaps to get. Some websites say that the height of the icecap SLR is 2.75inches and other say it is 1inch. Is this a mistake or are there two different types? If they are different would the reflector with more height help to gather more light from the sides of the bulb making it "brighter" then the latter?

Thanks for the help

They aren't as high as they are wide. They are about 2 1/2 inches wide.

grim,

i'm setting up a 60g with the dimensions being 48.5 length x 15.5 depth x 17.25 tall which will put the sand bed about 14-15 inches from the rim. this will be a LPS, zoa, and shroom tank. i can get a great deal on a current sundial fixture. it has individually contoured reflectors like the extreme pro but only has 4 bulbs. would this four bulb fixture be enough to keep the corals happy or should i just get an extreme pro or something better?

Sundial would work fine.

Are the ATI Blue Plus , UVL Super actinic and UVL 75/25 going to work in the non ho fixtures, as I listed on my tank?

As I posted, my tank has,

T5 NO
T5NO
T5 vho
t5 vho
t5 vho
t5 vho
t5 no
t5 no

You recommended

Blue plus
super actinic
50/50 actinic white
blue plus
pro color
blue plus
75/25
blue plus

Sounds like a great mix, but I am not sure about those bulbs working in the standard fixtures on the ends.

Thanks for your help!

No, if you have standard T5 fixtures I think coralife has blue and white lamps for those.

Grim, I just perchased a 72" Aquactinics Constellation fixture to replace may 3x150 MH Sunpod. I wasn't getting good color from my corals and had many dark areas. My tank has mostly SPS corals with a clam in the sand bed about 19" from water line. What bulbs would give me the best look and growth in your opinion? The fixture has 7x36" bulbs, side by side configuration for a total of 14 bulbs. Thanks
