Once a girlie tank's owner gets exited because the skimmer collected a cup full of coffee looking sludge that smells like the south end of a northbound Yak with irritable bowl syndrome that owner graduates from chick to reefer.

LOL, Grim !!! I guess I qualify to be a reefer too, then!

What part of MT you in?

Billings [/B][/QUOTE]

At least you still have a reef store (stores) there. Missoula's one and only closed down. Guess its a good thing I moved, probably would have opened one up if I still lived there.

Grim,

I assume you've read this recent Dana Riddle article:

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/12/aafeature1

From it:
Further experiments (Kinzie and Hunter, 1987) found that corals exposed for more than 60 days to light composed of mostly the red portion of the spectrum resulted in corals that "…were almost entirely free of algae and appeared white, but retained complete coverage of living animal tissue. We have not been able to obtain this degree of bleaching with any other method, including prolonged shading."

I am curious what your thoughts are on that. Obviously alot of people are using Procolors and their corals are not bleaching, people say it improves color.

Do you think this particular test relies on the fact that ONLY red light was used? Ie... if a relatively broad spectrum is provided and red happens to be part of that, its not harmful and could instead be beneficial to bring out different pigments.

Or I wonder if its strictly a threshold of red intensity itself?

Thanks

Getting back into the hobby after a year off and setting up a 20l (12" tall) mixed reef with mostly sps/lps. Was thinking about two 150w HQI. After reading the info in this thread, i think i'll try T5's instead.

How many bulbs and what colors would allow me to keep any SPS, or maybe down the road, clams? I was thinking a six bulb (24 watt each)setup would work. Any thoughts?

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus
ATO Aquablue

Good PAR and nice look. That will leave you with the actinic and a blue plus for dusk/dawn.

Thanks, but what is a UVL 75/25? Im on their website and it is not listed.

THANKS! (again)

hi grim

I need some advice here
I just set up a new lighting system with an icecap 660 009, 4 24w T5s (2 actinics & 2 10K) and waterproof endcaps.
All new from Drs Foster & Smith
I set up the system and everything worked fine

I have been turning the system on for 1 hour the last 4 days until yesterday that it would not start
The 2 actinics start for 1 second and then shut off, and the 2 10,000K seem burned at the ends

I've been told that this happened because i don't have fans so i will install them this week. How many fans?
Also, do you have any other idea what may have cause this?

I just read that article and all I can say is WOW!

I have had the theory since listening to Grim that blue bulbs are a lot better then any daylight bulbs for growing and keeping coral.

I still think you must use a daylight or some kind of bulb that has red in it. You could use the 75/25, Pro Color or Fiji Purple to accomplish this.

But as we already know the blue bulbs we use with T5's are the highest PAR you can get. So not only do you get great growth you get better color too!

we have two and one of them is really crappy

Well I think I'll try to find 2 used Icecap 430 to power 6x 54w overdrived and put some reflector on them.

Another 400$ at least..

Yes all your lamps should have reflectors. If you cant raise them high enough to keep the spray off them you might try adjusting your waterflow so if isn't stirring the surface up so bad. Usually if the lamps are at least 4" above the water you dont get much salt spray. If all else fails just wipe down the lamps and reflectors every few days with RO water.

Grim,
I just bought a 48" tek 5 8X54w T5 lighting fixture for my 75g tank and I have a couple questions. First of all Im not sure how I should place the bulbs. I have four actinic+ and for aquablue+ right now(should I have 4 of each?). Should I place two actinic+ bulbs on each edge of the fixture and then put the four aquablue+ bulbs in the middle so they turn on seperatly? Also how high should the light be from the water? My tank is 20" deep. Thanks.

what blue bulb are you reffering to? i want to add more blue to my tank, but do not want to sacrifice growth.

ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

Or how ever you need to arrange it so you get the two blues for dusk/dawn.

Aquactinics Constellation or ATI fixture would be good replacements.

Grim, thanks for the response I was thinking about getting new fixture and since the Aquactinics Constellation and the 6 bulb ATI power module are almost the same price which one would you recommend? Like I said before mostly zoos and acans in the tank with 22" depth and 48" across.

Thanks

I am setting up a 50 (36x18x18) gallon tank which will include sps for sure (maybe a clam later). I was wondering what 36 inch light fixture you would recommend? The shop I normally deal with sells Tek lights but I have heard good things about aquactinics.

tek 6 bulbs
aquactinics 5 bulbs (but better cooling?)

also what bulbs would you recommend with the light you pick?

Thanks in advance.

Brian

If you want the highest PAR possible go with the ATI Aquablue.

Close behind the Aquablue is the ATI Blue Plus. I would recommend getting both and trying them out to see what you like. Both bulbs grow like crazy.
