Grim,
Wow! You liked the cheaper unit? IT looked pretty nice to me. What would you recommend then for the bulb combo? I knew you saw this question coming.......LOL!
Thank you Grim

Hi Grim,

Currently I'm using the 6 bulb nova pro extreme fixture with stock bulbs on my 55g tank. You can find a current FTS of my system here . (I don't want to muck up the post with large pics)

I like the color im getting currently, but havn't seen any other T-5 systems in person so I have no comparison. I have a mixed reef including different types of SPS, LPS and clams. Im looking for new bulbs that would give me some decent growth and also look decent. (Which is the point for all systems I guess,)

I was thinking something like this...:
ATI blue+
UV Aquasun
UV Super Actinic
KZ Fiji Purple
ATI blue+
ATI Aquablue Special

...but I know nothing about the different T-5 bulbs. Thanks!

looking at possibly upgrading tanks in the future and was wondering if i got a 30" deep tank with a 1-2" sandbed would a 60" ATI powermodule be enough light to keep some LPS lower light corals on the bottom or would there not be enough light penetration?

what is the current best single bulb to run out there? going on a slim frag tank, and will be powered by 1 x t5... what do you recommend?

i was thinking the uvl actinic white? i guess i am looking for a good all around bulb, promotes best growth and coloration... i understand it won't be the best for viewing... ultimtely will go into display with 400w radiums...

Grim,
suggestions on a 40 breeder. ATI 6 or 4 bulb? Think 6 is overkill?
I'm just stuck on the idea that I would have more bulb options with 6 vs. 4.
If 4, this is what I'd go with... 3xATi Blue+ and an Ati Aquablue Special, think that works?

Grim:

I have been reading this thread for the last 4 hours and my head hurts, so I apologize if this has already been answered:

I am planning a 48" long peninsula tank, 26" wide and 22" deep, all acropora. Would the 48" Aquatinics Constellation provide enough coverage and light penetration for an all acro tank at that depth? Would the solar flare be a better option?

ATI is not an option because it has to sit on top of the tank (no hanging).

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have found I like the UVL Actinic White more than the aquasun but your mix looks good to me.

ATI Aquablue would probably be highest PAR. Fiji Purple would probably give a better look and the Actinic white would probably produce the best color with better growth than the fiji but look the worst IMO. Flip a coin.

I like more lamps, I'd do 6 and throw in some lower PAR lamps.

UVL Super Actinic
ATI Pro Color

UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus

The Super Actinic, 75/25 and pro color are all lower PAR lamps so the blue plus and to a lesser extinct the 75/25 will give you your growth.

You can sit the ATI right on the tank if you want.

If you are careful about which corals you place down low in the tank the constellation should be fine. Solar flare in my opinion isn't going to give you the spread to cover that much tank but if you are leaving open sandbeds at both sides it should be fine too.

Thanks man! I really appreciate it. Any other options come to mind?

Just wanted to get a recommendation, and it seems that this is the place to get some good advice.

Grim, at present I am in the process of planning an upgrade. The new tank will be a marineland DD tank, the 200 gallon to be exact. the measurements are 48"L x 36"W x 27"H.
My previous tank had two MH 250w icecap 20k bulbs in lumenarc reflectors with two Vho on an icecap 660 for sunrise/sunset.

I wanted to plan a more efficient lighting system, That did not run as hot and uses less energy. for this I have been looking at replacing the aforementioned lighting with a T5 retro or fixture. For the retro I was thinking a 12 bulb system, 4 bulbs each on two separate Icecap 430 ballasts and 4 bulbs on an icecap 660. The first 4 would go on for 2 hours (sunrise), then the next 4 bulbs would come on in addition to the first four for another 2 hours ( together ). then four hours after the first bulb came on the last 4 bulbs would come on, 660 driven bulbs to simulated noon hours, for 4 hours. after the 4 hours the cycle would reverse until all bulbs would turn off after a 12 hour light cycle.

I am leaning more towards a retro since a 12 bulb fixture that does what I want to accomplish is not available at the time.

For this tank I would like to have a mix of lps , sps and softies also two clams that I have. Do you think this setup would be viable and if so what lamp combo would I need if the lamps where as follows:

each number represents a ballast- ballast 1, ballast 2 and ballast 3:
bulb setup would be :
1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3

Not for T5's unless you want to use a canopy and retrofit kit

Okay. Now, for the inevitable: bulb choice!

I really like a blue tank with heavy florescence, but in this application (all acros) it seems to me that it has to be balanced towards the PAR side.

Suggestions?

Overdriving 4 lamps wouldn't be a bad idea. That would still give you 2 stage dusk/dawn plus extra intensity for SPS. The Dursa would be fine without overdriving but if you wanted Maximas or croceas on the sand the overdriving would be a good idea.

I was just wondering, what is wrong with the Tek fixture? I know it has no integrated cooling, but since I plan on putting it inside a canopy I could add my own fan cooling, correct?

What do you mean by the actinic white producing best color but look the worst?

I have a 90 gallon tank. I am trying to figure out if I should go with 2x250 mh with actinic supplemen or If I should do t5 lights. The tank is 48lx18wx24d so I just dont know. Suggestions on what would work. Tank is cycling right now so I have not stocked it and I dont know what I want to stock it with. Just trying to figure out things right now. If I can do t5 how many bulbs and what fixture would work. I dont really want to spend $1000 but more like maybe $500 or so would be ok.
Thanks
Gary
