Grim
4 bulb IC 660 ballast and looking for best growth /colr combo for SPS tank. Not that big into the real blue look but a little is OK. 40 Breeder BTW

Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

That isnt really going to look as blue as you might think, maybe 14K at best.

i just purchased a nova extreme 8 bulb unit.I don't like the white moonlights, has anyone tried to remove them and replace with them with blue ones.I have a set of 8 blues I could use.How hard could it be?

Eric

Try it and let us know :D

cich4fish: I have a Nova Extreme 8x54w running on my holding tank right now, till I buy my new big tank. I just had to move. One of my ballasts Grim just blew out.
From the front:
The first light and 3rd light sockets do not work. I opened up the Nova and found 4 different ballasts made by sunpark. Could I replace one of the ballasts with a IC660? The ballasts are under the single parabolic reflector. I am unsure how the wiring goes, therefore I cannot pinpoint the exact 1 ballast or 2 that went out.

I think this light has much potential and I am going to try to mod this rather than purchasing a whole new system for my 75. cich4fish as far as the blue moonlights go, They are not connected to a ballast and run all the time offa one power cord, They are pretty weak also IMHO. I just took apart the light the other day and Im pretty sure just buy new single 1w blue leds to replace and just wire them in.. They stock ones are about 1/4 the size of a small christmas bulb. Just cut and re-wire..

Since one of the ballasts kicked out, I am going to buy 2 IC SLR and mess around to see if I can upgrade the reflectors (or just a few lamps with SLRS)
Also will be testing some IC 54w bulbs.

Also the white LED moonlights are just pushed a tiny bit through the parabolic reflector. There are no mounts for the LEDS just a little rubber washer that keeps them secure in the reflector. On the underside of the reflector the lights are just wired one to the other. Simple DIY.

Grim: Do you think 4 bulbs on IC SLRS in the Nova Extreme 48" 8x54w T5 Light with Stock Sunpark Ballasts would outperform 8 bulbs on the Single Parabolic? What About 6 bulbs on the Parabolic (my current situation)

What if you put your PAR monsters on SLRS 4x and your accent bulbs (actinics or FIJI / 75.25) used with the space inbetween the SLRS sorta using the pre-existing stock Parabolic?

I think 4 lamps on Ice Cap reflectors with good lamps would beat 8 stock lamps.

Another possibility would be if your lamp placement in the fixture works out use one IC reflector for two lamps. A guy on RC (linkrat I think is his screen name) did this on a Catalina fixture and got a very nice boost. I am not sure if the Nova fixture would get the same advantage.

I need to dig up one of those and play.

how would it be possible to put 2 bulbs in 1? doesnt the clip only support one bulb? I will def try it though.. So.. I have 2x 75.25 and getting twilights, do you think the twilights or 75.25 would be better in the SLRs?

And can you give me a bulb combo for 8x nova extreme? I like the blue 20k look. I already have 2 75.25s The rest are current USA actinics and 10ks.. I also have 1x GLO power? its 18k. kinda pinkish also.
I plan on buying some bulbs today if he got his IC bulbs in at OGII in NJ.

Blue Plus
UVL Actinic White

Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

or is that too powerful

I'd change the first actinic white to a UVL Super Actinic and make sure it's placed with Blue Plus for your Dusk/dawn. You really wont notice much difference with all the lights on but your dusk/dawn will look a little better (softies really pop under actinics) and 2 Actinic Whites would probably give you a little too much red.

How blue is this going to be compared to the stock NEP lights?

then turn on the UVL super Actinic, Actinic White and Blue plus as my dusk/dawn?

and should i replace one bulb every other day or place them all at once?

thanks

You would have to remove the stock reflector and mount the Ice Caps in the correct position. You might have to drill and tap the fixture if you can't use a nut and bolt to attach the reflectors.

Quite a bit more blue. Strong 15K blue but not too blue look.

Do the super actinic and 2 blue plus as dusk dawn just to see if you like it better but what you listed would look cool too.

I would replace a lamp a day just cause you can.

You can but make sure the fixture can get airflow on the ends. I would also add a fan blowing fresh air into the canopy too.

Grim, I've played with some bulb combos and found something I like. I just want to make sure there isn't any issues with this. Tank is 95% SPS 48x24x24

ATI Powermodule:

Front
ATI Blue+
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue+
KZ Fiji Purple
ATI Procolor
ATI Blue+
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue+
Back

Sunrise/sunset are both Blue+ bulbs.

I wasn't sure if this is too much red. I've read there could be issues with too much red. I LOVE the extra warmth the Procolor gives to my tank.

Amazingly the tank still has a pretty white appearance to me. Not blued out or 20k'ed at all.

Should be fine

The whole red light thing has been so misinterpreted it is funny. A coral placed under ONLY red light, no other colors didn't grow well. I don't ever remember if they measured the PAR for that test but in any rate red isn't bad for corals, they MAY just need other colors to grow.
