The TBS

Looks like a Eunicd worm to me.

Are they supplying gulf rock or keys rock. A couple years ago they had the red tide that did some serious damage to their gulf rock supply.

Here is a short video of some things I need to get an ID for. It is kinda blue, I need to work on my video camera skills. These lights are a bit bluer than the one in the 24 gallon.

1. I think this is an Abalone
2. Tiny black crab. White tips on claws and legs.
3. Some type of cowrie. It moved since yesterday so it appears to be nocturnal.
4. Scary worm I am sure is Eunice worm? Need to get him out some how.

Enjoy

If I could see the sides, I could tell you about the abalone possibility, but off hand I'd say not an abalone. Most of them I have seen have a smoother looking shell and sort of prefer colder waters.

I could be wrong about that though.

The crab?!? Most crabs are no good.... hate em, unless the are with garlic butter and legs big enough to eat...

I will try to find it again and get some better shots. Originally it looked like a piece of rock or something. I must have flipped it back over when adjusting some rocks. It was at that point I realized the rubble was moving lol. So I grabbed the camera.

no mantis yet? Try rubber banding a silver side to a rock out front on the sand bed and see if anything comes out and gets it. I swear mine can smell it before it hits the water.

I tried the bottle trap, I caught one of my Jumbo nassauris snails. Sucker climbed right in. I may try the rubber band trick just to see if anything comes to dinner. I know there are a few more crabs in there. I am not too worried about them. Most I have seen are small and I know where they live, I am just lazy lol.

I did catch 3 of those worms last night and just now I caught another swimming worm. Don't think it is a Eunice worm. Has two distinct black spots and two antenna. It busted when I siphoned him up though. Also just pulled out a whelk. 2nd one so far. Wife is going to the store tomorrow and I will have her pick up some club soda. See if I can fizz the scary worm out.

Quick question. My skimmer has started to stop foaming out al over the place. I am only running it when I can keep an eye on it. It makes me nervous otherwise. it is producing quite a bit of micro bubbles into the tank. I am sure this will dissipate as time goes on. Should I worry about the sponges though? I know they can not have air trapped in them or they will die.

oh and on a National Geographic note. I tried to bait out some critters with a piece of silver side banded to a chunk of rock. I only caught my Peppermint shrimp and jumbo nassauris snails. The serpent stair came over to investigate but got scared off by the shrimp for some reason. All of a sudden a claw come out of hte rock and snatches it. SO the star has one leg in the rock and is flailing all over the place. SO I freak out and grab the tong and fre him.

It took me 30 minutes to get that crab out of the rock. I did not have any club soda so I was using the giant tweezers. Needless to say the crab is missing a couple legs and a claw but he is alive. I think I may torture him later and find out who sent him to sabotage the tank.

sorry but that sounds awesome.....maybe its because I'm picturing everything as godzilla size!

Get that Godzilla crab!!!!!!

It was a fight for sure. He even tried to take a swipe at me. Couldn't get through the gloves though. Right now I am trying to get he work out with club soda. Not much luck. I am thinking I have a few of these worms. I did manage to get out 4 crabs so far and a porcelain crab too. He went back in . Others go to the dungeon.

SO things are moving along into the ugly stage. I got the brown film on the rocks and glass. That gave way to the hair algae. So far it is mainly contained to the back glass and the rotating Hydors. I tossed in a few tiger turbos a few days ago and they are starting to move around.

I am starting to get some hair on the rocks now too. I am tentative on part 2 for May 9th. Need to follow up with Richard on Monday and see if he can do that. My skimmer is finally pulling stuff out but not foaming out of the cup. Because there is a drain fitting I basicly have a choice of wet or dry skim lol. I have it set for wet and it is pulling things out.

I did a full test today. My nitrates are 0 which I really doubt. I think the hair algae is sucking them all up. My kh is low at 5.8 dkh. Calcium is at 480. I used to dose my tank every other day with Agramilk but I have not done anything to this tank yet. Mainly waiting to see how it balances out. I am not too worried yet but I am keeping an eye on it.

I am thinking of doing a 5 gallon water change early next week and siphon out some hair algae. I did a 5 gallon change last week already. My phosphates were .4 on my Seatest but today they were .2. I have been running some Phosban since the last water change. Any suggestions on the hair or should I jsut sorta wait it out.

I think you'll be fine. I had the same issue with my first batch of TBS. Once I got the second part and things settled down, all of the hair algae (and misc macro algae) disappeared. Remember, that stuff comes straight outta the ocean so it has some weird stuff on it at first.

-Mike

True, besides the die off from shipping, you'll also have dieoff from all the stuff that isn't really keepable in an aquarium.

Once everything settles in you'll be rockin.

IMO, it doesn't hurt to turn those lights off for 24 to 48 hours as well.

I figured as much. Once all the snails get going I think it will knock it out. I think the phosban will help too. The mushroom culpera is doing well. I pruned off some of it that was covering some tube corals and a trunicate. It is certainly growing well. Once I start getting more corals to fill the spaces I will weed most of it out. The red macro stuff is really cool though. Hope that sticks around.

Well I got part 2 today. Was rather a surprise. I shot TBS an email this morning asking for a delivery this week, preferable wed. I got an email back saying the rock was on the way. I was headed to Merrimac caverns today. Luckily the flight came in at 5 pm so I was back and could go get it. No mantis shrimp though. I feel bad that I got people's hopes up and there is none. There is still a few snaps so maybe there is one lol.

So besides the rock I got:
Purple Whip Gorgonian
2 other gorgonian
A flame Scallop
Some other scallop/clam thing
a red finger sponge
a yellow finger sponge
a huge yellow ball sponge
a red sponge thing
a yellow scroll? sponge
A condy anemone
a shaving brush

PLus I got the rest of the critters with a bonus pep shrimp and cuke.

Over all it looks good. There is a bunch of hard corals on the rock. Some type of polyp colony. I will try to get some shots tomorrow. It is very hard to aquascape the rock in the 55. It is very narrow and the rock is hard to stack and keep stable. I am working on it though.

The skimmer is starting to foam out again!!!! This is driving me nuts. I did a quick 7 gallon water change this evening before I got the rock in hopes of siphoning out some of the massive hair algae I had going on the back glass and hydors. So what should I do about the skimmer? I am afraid to leave it on all night. It may foam out of the cup and all over the place. Would not be good, especially since the wife is start to take an interest in the tank. Suggestions?

Put a bucket under it?

Wait, isn't the skimmer in the tank? In the false sump? Or is it hanging in the back?

it is a remora hang on. It looks like it is starting to even out now. The problem is the bubbles just don't pop so it fills the cup. But on a good note I took the top and scrapped it agains the side to get bubbles of. 20 minutes later those bubbles had popped into black goo. Some nasty stuff coming out of that tank.

I think, I am fairly sure, but I think I saw an octopus earlier. It was silverish and about the size of my thumb. I got my glove and container but could not find it again. Crazy life on these rocks man....crazy...
