The time has come....

Finally the time has come to fill my 75 gallon tank that has been sitting in the basement collecting dust for almost a year (march 2006) now I just hope I get time to do it tomorrow. I was just wanting to know before I fill it what people use below their substrate to prevent any damage from occuring to the bottom of the tank. I have heard of cutting board but have no clue what it is or where to get it (probably home depot or lowes correct?). I have heard of people using light diffuser/eggcrate as well. I thought this may cause dead spots in the sand because of sand sifting creatures not being able to get in between the sqaures to do their "thing". The last idea is to put a sheet of acrylic on the bottom. I would just have cut to fit because its an AGA with a Mega Flow. I dont feel like doing any cutting to fit but I guess if I have to I will. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Just sand with the lowest layer or rock put down first so that as sand sifting/digging creatures dig in the sand the rock doesn't shift and fall over.

The cutting board is a replacement for sand. That is for people who want to run barebottom tanks but want some color similar to sand on the bottom.

I agree, Just put down sand and like Roy said try putting the bottom layer of rock as close the the glass as possible.

I put cut pieces of eggcrate under the corners of my base rocks just to lift them and allow a pistol and other creatures to burrow underneath them. Now if I could just keep a pistol shrimp alive long enough to take advantage

I dont have a DSB, I am Bare Bottom.... for me its the only way to go... super easy clean up and water changes.... I got my cutting board from the cuttingboardcompany.com. I'd look into BB if you are lazy like me.

i'm lazy as well and thought about doing a BB because of this. I just like the look of having a substrate.
