The Ultimate 30-37 gallon cube thread!

No I don't have it already, I've just seen really good reviws of it, and while I was looking at my sump today the idea of hanging it inside hit me. I'll go look at the urchin right now. Is it what you use? If so how do you like it?-Pecc

No, I don't have one yet. I am in the same boat as you. I will end up with either the Remora or Urchin before long. I have seen good reviews on both of them.

I use a Remora...It is less then a "Stellar" performer for me. I'm stuck with it for a while longer.

Here it is. FYI-I'm running Ozone thru it to kick it up a notch or 3.

Mine just squezes in at 30g.

Well here it is. After a bad start, having to drain and make up new water, the new tank is running and the move was done today.

Specs:

-24w X 16d X 18h
-Starpire glass all 4 sides
-Build in 1 1/2" overflow w/durso
-Eurobracing
-250w PFO HQI ballast
-XM20k bulb
-2x120mm - 110cfm each -- these will be changed already as they are noisy.
-AquaC 150 Skimmer - Upgraded to a ER5-2
-Mag 5 - return

And now for the pics.

I tested it out with fresh water first

Here it is after the dust settled and I re-aranged it.

I picked up 13lbs of rock, and 6 more frags.

Re: The Ultimate 30-37 gallon cube thread!

Not sure what the best combo is, but I went with a built in overflow and a 1 1/2" durso. I was using a mag5 for my return and I quickly realized it was not enough. I bought a SQWD realizing i would loose some head pressure, so I have a Mag12 on the way. I figure I should get between 900-1000gph out of my returns...

Well,

I am starting to get a little lost and trying to keep up with 3 different conversations going on at once on 3 different hijacked threads is giving me a headache. So I decided to start a thread dedicated to 30-37 gallon cube tanks!

Now we have one central place to all gather and talk tanks. I hope this thread takes off, but If you would all rather keep it the way it was, I understand.

So, to start things out, I am a bit confused about overflows and return pumps. Pick out some good equipment for me.

kimche- what exactly don't you like about your remora?
And this is gonna ask like a stupid question I'm sure, what is ozone and what exactly does it do? Help with skimming? thanks-pecc

Walter NICE!

I would consider changing the steel clamp in your sump for a plastic one...Other then taht-SCHWEET>

Pec- It just doesn't skim well but it fit the space and budget at the time. Ozone is O3 (Oxygen is O2) the extra Oxygen molecule breaks down some compounds and they become easier to skim out.

Thanks for the compliment!

It got replaced when I replaced the AquaC150 with the ER. :D

Tank looks really great walter. Did you get your tank with starpire glass? I've read about that in a marine book i have they say its crystal clear apparently like yours. I love the lighting on your tank to. I'm currently deciding on switching to metal halide or not. There's so much stuff to buy with these tanks you get so overwhlemed :p Tank looks great tho, i really like the rockwork too.

Thanks and Yes, I had it custom built, I wanted it on 3 sides, they did it with 4 sides at no extra charge.. I'm amazed at how clear it is. No green tint to it at all. It was tough to decide on lighting... I wanted to get a MH but I didn't want to have to add actinic lights as well, that's why I went with the 20k I was trying to keep it simple. I may try out a Hamilton 14k to see how I like it...

Thats nice they gave you the forth on the cuff. I wanna go with metal halides also. I'm thinking of going with a unit that holds actinics ,halide and lunars all in one tho. Coralife puts one out, so i might go with theres. I think the 20K has a really nice tone to it. I seen it at the LFS by me. A little bluish but not extremely. Maybe 14K would be good. I believe Sugar Mag has a 14K and her tank looks really good too.

Finally got my HGB up and on today. What a difference. I can't believe how much noise this thing eliminates. I'm so glad with the results. Now i gotta start to add sand , rock and some macroalgae. Thanx everyone for helping me out ;)

Hey Whaase. Can you tell us how to get a tank like yours? Also do you have any microbubble problems...I dont see any baffles.

I had it made at Interamerica. They are about 20minuts from my house! :D It was completed and picked up within 5 days (including weekend). I've heard and read that people from out of town seem to have long delays.. if you ever call them ask for Doug Betts, he was great and suggested many things... I don't have any microbubbles with the new skimmer. I also have my return pump intake facing the corner of my sump.
