Instead of salt has anyone tried using the foam packing peanuts made from corn starch that dissolve in water?

You could cut them up and make them into all different types of sizes.

I thought about it. But then I would either eat them (they taste like stale popcorn) or have fun melting them in ways they aren't supposed to be melted :lmao: Oh, and availability versus price had a small factor in it ;)

If I can find some in a box around my house, I might try a couple in my next mix. They would be a GREAT way to provide some bigger holes.

On my next mix, I plan to mix up the cement and water first, and then add salt (and packing peanuts, if I find them). The goal is to make sure I have the cement consistency right. I might have to add a LITTLE more water after I add the salt.

They should decompose pretty quicly. They pretty much melt in your mouth. Really, you should try them. Not to taste, but to see how quick they melt. I would only give it a few days to be completely dissolved out.

Regarding the silica sand, I thought it would be great to use a little beach sand from our Lake Michigan Beach (sentimentally) on one end of the tank, but didn't think about the fact that Lake Michigan beaches are silica-based until I had the tank going. Who knows, the algae blooms could have been related to something else, but they did stop when the sand was removed.

If you got your sand from a beach, i bet your algae problems were due more to the pollution, detrius, and phosphates in the sand than the sand itself. if you used pure sterilized sand from home depot i bet you wouldn't have the same problem.

Wow, I've been reading and studying this thread for a week now. Great thread, great info, and I'm going to give it a try. Thanks Travis and everyone else too!

I was wondering (uh oh, now y'all are in trouble), what about using larger amounts and using 2 perpendicular flat surfaces or even a corner making the "back" wall into one design using these mixtures? I would think it would look very cool while at the same time have the effect of live rock (while saving space and not dead space like foam) and also perhaps mold/shape for island type rock areas as well into caves and such. I'd imagine you'd have to have some sort of large scale mold and big enough containers to "kure" them in...

I was thinking that you could do this from the start of a new tank but then I remembered early on in this thread that there is a lot of crud from the curing process that could mess up the other tank panes...

...wow, this has been one of the most interesting and fun threads on this site! I can't wait to get dirty up to my elbows and make some rock pies!!!!:D

you can do that and it has been done before. i don't know if it was in this thread or another one.

anyway, you have to be carefull with making large molds in that you can still actually lift them to put them in the tank. other than that, if it is cured properly in fresh water it doesn't really matter the shape as long as it is strong enough to hold together and it is what you like.

That's what I plan on doing in my new 75g Montipora Only tank. I was going to make a "backdrop" with the rock. Also, my wife's seahorse tank has an overflow in the center. We are going to form the rock around the pipes

I just tried to eat a "peanut" from my Marine Depot order that just arrived to see if they use the corn starch kind.

AND, COUGH, COUGH

No they are not corn starch......

I'll have to check the hellolights peanuts next, but I need some water to wash it down just in case! Update in a minute.

Neither are the Hellolights peanuts. I should have known right off as it was green. It still went down fairly smooth with a little Pepsi chaser.
I definitley have to give the best tasting peanut prize to Marine Depot so far. But no stale popcorn yet.
Hmmmm what else have I mail ordered lately????

:eek1: :eek1: :eek1:

All I have to say is if it doesn't readily melt in your mouth, don't wash it down at all :eek1: :D The cornstarch ones are a little off-white colored while the styrofoam is pure white....usually.

That's really funny. But maybe you should create a PACKING PEANUT EATING thread. I can see it with a poll..... :D

Just put a peanut under your faucet. The water will instantly melt it.

IR, add the air during the mixing process after you have mixed it really good.

I'm going to try to use some luandry detergents in a batch, that will cuase air pockets as well. Another idea is alkacelser to cause it to add voids. Now these would need to be monitored during the leaching time to verify they are safe for a tank.

After 8 hrs of sitting on my beach project I'm to tierd to go get the supplies today hehe. What a lamer I am.

Those where some very nice DIY pictures.

We owned a hobby store, and some of the kids would bring dip on shipment day and eat the things - I think they would disolve in about 2 minutes in cement, possibly quicker if you stirred it, lol.

I'm planning on doing this very thing - would make a cool place for shrooms.

Basically you would want to use a frame/mould the exact size of the tank wall, minus DSB depth and one inch at the top, line with plastic and plop your mud in. Now, I have mocked this up, using a snake cage top as the form, and using plastic to allow "panels" that overlap slightly. Now I did these with the white type 1, and used only salt for lightness, which never released from the cement, but it shows one way it would work, with proper mix.
I have a few pic's, I will post some stuff later, including this panel idea and the 3ft monster "Nessy"...
As well as MY Ultimate DIY :D
